I have just purchased a steel silhouette, named CHRISTEEL, built in 1967 by a J.T.Richardson ,Rochford, essex.and is belived to be the only known steel silhouette Mk11 ,I know she was still in the river crouch area till 1976/1977,can anybody tell me any history on her ,or that of the builder any help on the subject most welcome trishian1@btconnect.com

i dont think I have ever heard of such a small boat built in steel.Could you give us some details of her construction,eg how thick are the hull plates etc?

As to wether she is a classic boat ,how long is a piece of string? She has survived nearly 40 years and silhouettes have many recorded epic voyages to their credit.

as far as i can tell without using veriers etc i would think she has 1/8th steel plates with a lot of angle iron frames and stringers, and steel bulkheads ,she has been built to a very high standard of engineering ,and very little evidence of rust pitting which i find incredible ,must have been very very well looked after over the years ,apparently there where several constucted in steel ,but this seems to be the onlty known surviver

Try posting a question to the Roach Sailing association here.

Roach Sailing Assoc

They have been around a long time, and have a good knowledge of these sort of things, especially as unusual as a steel Silhouette. There are quite a few round here ( I live near the Roach, 4 miles from Rochford). Sorry, but this one is a bit before my time.

Good Luck

Jim

There is a lot of nonsense talked about what is an isn't a classic boat. If she's a classic in your eyes then a classic she is.

Hi Jim thanks for the information ,have allredy sent e-mails to the roach and crouch clubs ,also the crouch harbour master ,who is the only one to have replied ,but he has no records as far back as 1976/1977,also been in touch with local pres to see if anything can be found ,Jim this J.T.Richardson who built the boat ,is it a boat yard or an individual ,,do you know ,or know of anybody that might know ?? regards Ian

Think it must be an individual.
