Hi, this is my first post, I was looking around for some info about the mercury 500 online and found this site, seems that this would be the best place to post some questions :)

My Father has a 1965 Merc500 50hp 4cyl. that he is currently trying to fix up, it runs fine in idle, but under any kind of load it bogs down and cuts out. it could be any number of things but it has been torn down and rebuilt checking all the parts along the way, everything seems ok, any ideas would be great!

TIA Steve.

Hi,
If it bogs on load (and you're fairly sure the main jet is OK) it must be coil/condenser/ignition advance IMHO

I agree with adarcy. Remeebr, with this motor, that kind of fault will always be either fuel supply or ignition, nothing else. The carbs are pretty easy to strip down and clean/rebuild

I think a 1965 model will have capacitor discharge ignition ("thunderbolt" decal) but a belt driven distributor to send the spark to the right cylinder and a mechanical linkage to advance/retard

For detailed info google for american old mercs boards. They have loads of info. also http://www.oldmercs.com
