I was driving my 1962 Morris Minor this evening complete with dim lights, dreadful brakes and no demisting etc etc.... Got me thinking as to what has been the most significant developments in motorboats over the last 30/40 years or so ?

The Morris, much as I love it is way removed from my everyday motor transport...and I thought the comparison to boats might be interesting.

That certain "something" old cars have and new cars never will have. Same applies to boats. Did that make sence, nah didn't think so.
 
Character..... My 1966 Morris Mini Cooper has more character than any monern car could ever be infected with. (i.e. BMW Mini)

I also think older boats have more character. I think they have gone more for the styling rather than the function.

crap cars, crap boats

Of course, normal cars were all crap in 1962, at least in the UK amnd indeed in the rest of europe. So were motorboats, and sailboats.

These days, cars start easily, go nice and fast, have brakes and heating that all work. Likewise motorboats have far more powerful engines, use modern materialsand so on.

Normal sized (under 50 feet) sailing boats, on the other hand, remain resolutley crap imho. No carpet, nasty foam mattresses unless you spend far more than 100k, showers that it seems are accepted as unuseable, walkways between everywhere that is like an assault course, yet everyone seems fine about it. Everyone of course except sensible SWMBO's who tell hubbie (sorry to be non-PC it's usually this way round sorry) that they can get stuffed if they buiy that, how about a nice sunseeker? After being sneered at, hubbie +swmbo then nip round to sealine fairline etc and buy a nice comfy powerboat, which at least looks as though you could have a holiday without wearing a survival suit. Much better

But in 1962 they said the same about cars and boats built in 1922 !!!.

In 2042 what will people say about the people in 2002 who bought the flash motor boats of to-day.

Speed is no different though

I bet in any average journey in the southeast your morris minor will take pretty much the same time as a modern car.
At least a modern boat will probably be at least 10knots faster at cruising speed.

My experience of my early cars was pretty awful (talking early seventies) boiling rads flat batteries wheels falling off, yes Triumph Herald stub akle or something akin to that broke.

Could'nt bring myself to deem that to be character, though my old Morris Minor Traveler, I suppose had some, till I had the brakes go one day and realised that a brake master cylinder was housed in the chassis member which had rotted through and or course so had the brake master cylinder. Good plan heh

Now my modern car apparantly has no character, but if AC, central locking, power steering, no leaks, always starts, never broken down etc equates to no character,
then I'll just have to live with it.

Well I suppose principally three things,
1)Service interval, from what I recall the service interval was 3000 miles?
2)Electrical reliability
3)Vibration .. I used to luv the vibes from the old jelly bean!
