Hello there,

Suna (original name Aegir, sail no: III-28, length 32ft) is a historic classic racing yacht, built by Abeking and Rasmussen in 1936 mahogany on oak and has a very interesting history. She was built to the 30sq metre rule for use in German military training, then taken as war reparations by the British navy and sailed as far afield as Malta.

She has a lot of cracked frames and no interior, but is currently afloat in Liverpool and in sailing condition (light weather only).

I wonder if anyone can recommend someone in the north west who could replace the frames and do various other work on her at a sensible price, or in exchange for free sailing or a share of the boat? I'm open to any ideas for ways to help get suna back in tip-top order, can anyone help?

I have had lot of work done on my wooden yacht by John S Hill at Fairlie. Excellent work at good prices and a very interesting time with good humour and enormous amounts of help and advice for the bits I could do.

Saw his team do some fibre glass work too with absolutely superb finish. Varnish work a real success

You would find it hard to do better. Of course this is my opinion but after six months work I had only one minor complaint.

Thanks Bosunof... do you have any contact details for John?

Not sure I can afford a true professional though, I had a quote for 150 pounds per frame, excluding fitting them! I'm ideally looking for an enthusiastic amateur with plenty of free time and enough skill to make up steamed or laminated frames. We did a couple of frames successfully last year but I just don't have the time to do what's needed this year,

I'd happily give away a significant share of the boat for free to anyone who will put in a months work to fix her up enough to be safe for offshore sailing.

Edit: Did you mean Fairlie Restorations in Hamble? I need someone who can work on Suna in Liverpool - the lock is closed for maintenance for the next couple of months so I can't even take her to a neighbouring port, let alone all the way back to the solent - getting her to Liverpool from portsmouth a couple of years ago involved a great deal of bilge pumping (a gallon a minute if the sea was at all choppy!) and to attempt it again would be pushing my luck!!

Wow, sounds like a slow worker!
We work on 4 hrs per frame, laminated, if the access is reasonable and there are over four to do.
At £25/hr thats £100 each, fitted, and about £9 materials.

May be cheaper to come down south! Now theres a suprise!
