17,5 m cat pitchpoled in marina berth by wind

Difficult to say for sure but it looked like it had a sail up. Maybe an unfurled jib

The main halyard was still attached to the head of the sail & was a 2:1 ratio. The wind broke the zip on the sail cover, the windage on the halyard was sufficient to hoist the sail a third of the way up the mast, & that was sufficient to pitch pole the boat.

And also a get out for the insurance company

I would expect the insurance to pay out; they allow a certain amount of ignorance, laziness & stupidity! It's gross negligence where they'll decline to pay. Leaving your halyard attached to the sail I would not describe as gross negligence.

A 200 mph microburst coming along, pulling on the halyard, hoisting the sail causing a 60' boat to pitch pole is not something anyone could reasonably expect to happen as a consequence of the slight laziness of not fastening the halyard somewhere safer. At worst you might expect a damaged sail cover!

In the top right of the video you can see the mast of the 44m super yacht as it is knocked down just after the cat flips. A tad breezy indeed.

Fortunately we don’t get many tornadoes in Essex.

Not many, but some. In 2000 I was sailing past the Essex coast when we sighted a waterspout descending from a cloud less than a mile away. A column rose out of the sea and they met, continuing for several minutes. We were ready to drop the sails and motor like hell if it came any closer. Fortunately it dissipated without getting any closer.

I've see a waterspout off the Mull of Kintyre and two or three years ago I saw, from Port Bannatyne, a tornado touch ground in the hills behind Wemyss Bay. Very impressive.
