14 yr old\'s boat left in Antigua.................

The poor lad hasn't got the £10,000:00 to get his boat back!!!

I have just been told it's on BBC news but couldn't find it.

I understand that he would like it to be brought home so he can do the Round The Island race.

Anyone else heard off this?

Cheeky Monkey

If the lad was a drug taking criminal we would be stumping up £30 000 a year to keep him in a young offenders institution.PS I am only guessing 30k ,its probably more.

He has sailed into the record books in a British built yacht i think he deserves to get the boat back and enjoy his success.

Anyone here with Shipping line connections that could pull a string or two?

So what about Dad's boat is that to be sold as well.

I can't believe that this wasn't thought out before they set off.

Thanks Paul and Graham,

And Neil, I'm with you on this one.

Now as his farther hopes to sell his product on the back off this fantastic achievement by his Son, it would be great to get it back, at their expense, I bet Micheal, as most solo sailors do, has a bond with his tub!

I agree with what you say but hope this isnt a reflection on the state of the business. We all know the uphill struggle faced by british boat builders competing on a far from level playing field.

A non-record with an apt ending. His shameless father should stump up or shut up, preferably both.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

I'll do it for

£8,750:00!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Plus coverage on the return!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The main problem michael has is being British. The French for example treat their succesfull sailors as heros in a way we reserve for footballers .

We on the other hand just snipe at them from our armchairs.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

I disagree Graham. the main problem Michael has is his father.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

I had grave reservations about the venture beforehand .

While I think the Tide 28 is an excellent boat i cant see it as ideal for crossing oceans i think the otcome could have been very different. At the end of the day though whatever you or I think the lad has done it and should be applauded for his achievment.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

Erm, just being pedantic, but the boat is in Antigua, not America.....
The nearest American territory to Antigua would be the US Virgin Islands, about 200 miles away to the WNW.

Being even more pedantic, why ship the boat back? Paying 10k to do so is not going to increase its value by 10k.
Much better to sell it out here - it looks like the ideal sort of boat for pottering around somewhere like Antigua or the British or American Virgin Islands.
It is a Tide 28, and hence basically no different (if we believe them when they say it was a bog standard Tide) from any of the other Tides.

The two boats should sell like hot cakes here - and Mike and his Dad can then just go and borrow another boat from the Company when they get home, and sail it in the RTI.
