Bought a 10.4 inch remote control flat screen from Maplins. Designed to work off 12 battery as well as mains and includes freeview receiver which works fine with my mast mounted aerial. Only draws a nice 18 watts. Will also double as a PC monitor. Additionally has a terrestrial reciver as well for normal TV signal. Price £199.

I wonder how well these type of LCD screens will handle PC output - while they might accept it, they are designed for TV/DVD playback rather than PC screens. check "Roadstar" in google, they seem to be a market leader for car lcd screens.

It may be cheaper in the long to get a second-hand ruggedised PC (a refurbished Toughbook) which will be waterproof.

If you can spend the cash, there is a UK company making (expensive) waterproof daylight readable PC screens - I dont recall the name, but they are advertised in the UK sailing magazines & online.

I have a laptop based chartplotter with the PC in the chart table and an 8" LinITX touchscreen above it which works very well. Not waterproof so is in cabin but displays charts perfectly legibly.

that looks about right, thanks Steve. Although i wasnt planning on touch screen technology.

Had thought about a ruggedised PC but the main purpose is to keep the chart table clear as much as protect the PC. Besides, I only paid 50 quid for it, and can always buy another cheapie if there is a problem.

BTW, before others rant at me for relying on a PC, I am not. I have a plotter as well which will also be replaced.

Bought a 15 inch ( 12 volt) LCD TV from Asda last year. It has a nice external mains transformer, which means it works perfectly on board, and accepts a VGA input up to 1280 x1024.
We' ve nailed it to the wall in the main saloon.
Only one slight downside is that the sound goes off at 10.5 volts, vision stays on - why - dunno. Solution, switch the fridge off!

We have a 7 inch flat screen digital set bought from the DSG group - PC World, Curry's etc. Works off its own rechargeable batteries, which can be done from the boats 12 V supply, plus mains of course.

Cost? £129.00 - quite good value I reckon.
