I currently use a 2.1a / 1a adaptor plugged into a cigar lighter socket. Can anyone recommend a twin USB flush socket preferably with 2.1a output to both ports? Numpty question, do these type of sockets draw power even when there is nothing plugged in?

A year ago there was only one type, badged as Blue Sea and sold for an extortionate price. Now there are loads of them all over eBay, sent from China, and probably all much of a muchness. Should be around a tenner delivered, from memory.

I've bought one flush-mount one to install near the trash-tray where mobile phones live, and three that combine a lighter-socket and a USB into one housing (intended for the handlebars of a Far-Eastern moped :) ). The latter are to mount next to each regularly-occupied bunk, so that those of us with smartphones can charge them up overnight but still set alarms to catch the tide / read ebooks before going to sleep / check Twitter first thing in the morning :)

Warning, the cheap ones can produce a lot of radio noise which buggers your cricket enjoyment on radio 4 and can effect the reception on the old HH VHF. (go on, ask me how I know). :ambivalence:

I wonder what the life span will be for USB before the next exciting connector becomes the standard.

Not before time, a new USB C Connector has arrived which is finally reversible, so no more jamming upside down connectors into your phone!
I expect the rest will disappear.

If it's only the cricket that's affected I might get one. That's what buggers my enjoyment of Radio 4:(

+1 on HiAndDri's comment. It beggars belief that BBC still devotes a whole frequency even when there's no activity, and no alternative in N.France.
