SWMBO would like to get her hands on a small, 12v "boat" sewing machine for light use, not for sails or canvas. We have seen 6v ones powered from the mains via the standard black plug-in transformer.

Has anyone ever come across a proper 12v one powered directly from yer batteries?

My wife's fairly heavy duty machine is rated at just 90W so even a cheap inverter would presumably cope quite happily. I know inverters aren't 100% efficient, but I don't expect that the machine will be running for hours on end - probably in short bursts. I think our 300W inverter cost <£30, including croc odile clips to connect straight to the battery in addition to the cigar lighter type plug.

Not sure that the lighter plug would have the right size of cabling! check out the manufacturers requirements of the inveryer first!

My wife had been wanting a new machine for some time, and I agreed provided the old one would be refurbished and designated as an emergency boat sail repairer.

The first item tackled with the new machine was replacement of zips on all the boat cushions

win-win!

Reeds used to do a wonderful maritime sewing maching, but no longer available unless 2nd hand.

I have an old mains Husqvarna which is just so tough ! The older ones may be available in your local sewing machine shop - that's how I got hold of mine. The salesman couldn't understand why I didn't want a computer controlled one which did fancy letters and square buttonholes ! It cost £50...

Here is a feasible alternative - [urk]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Singer-Hand-Sewing-Machine-1908_W0QQitemZ260052636214QQihZ016QQcategoryZ3118QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem[/url]

zig zag is best stitch for sail repair.

Real men should be able to cook iron and sew as well as doing all the yo ho stuff - knowledge of course does not mean frequent practice /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
