I want to fit a horn to the roof of my tiny cabin cruiser and have this in mind:

http://www.force4.co.uk/992/Force-4-Single-Trumpet-Horn-12V.html

Two questions please:

1. Any comment about my choice?
2. Any advice on suitable seals / glands to enable a waterproof cable parth through the GRP roof?

I Appreaciate these may well be silly questions but I've made a number of silly mistakes during my first year of boat ownership and appreaicate your advice.

Thanks.

That'll be fine. Bear in mind though that all these horns have comparatively short life spans. Although the casings are stainless some of the inside gubbins aren't and the water does get inside and corrode.

I've just fitted a new one on my boat after the old one packed up for the same reason.

As far as through hull fixing goes, depending on the wiring arrangements of that particular horn I would just seal up with a good glob of sikaflex once you have fed the wire through the coachroof. The cable on mine goes through the mounting plate so it's a no brainer.

Good luck and happy honking!

What a shame the old car airhorns don't seem to be available any more! 12V compressor somewhere dry in the cabin and an all plastic horn on the coahroof - sounds perfect.

Aren't they? My mate's little brother has a pickup truck with a set of those "musical" horns under the bonnet. They run off a compressor and a small storage bottle.

Annexe III of the collision regulations specifies the frequency ranges applicable .... 250 to 700 Hz for vessels less than 75 metres in length , the audible range ... 0.5 nautical mile for a vessel under 20 metres and also diectional properties.

You should ask Force4 if the horn in your link complies with these requirements.
( they wont know but it will be fun quoting the specs to them :) )

Force 4, or any other chandler will be able to supply a suitable waterproof cable gland.
