I know that a lot of you have Tellys on board and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a supplier of a flat screen of about 10 - 12 inches.

I use my laptop with a hybrid USB TV dongle (i.e. able to capture both digital and analogue signals) fed from an indoor aerial + aerial amplifier.
 
B4 anyone else gets in ....

[tounge in cheek] I don't go sailing to watch East Benders or CrappyNation Street, I go sailing to get away from it all, not to be burdened with the rigours of day to day life. Why anyone would want a TV on board is beyond me, I do admit to having a transistor radio from the 70's, but that is just to catch the weather forecasts and listen to The Archers. [/tounge in cheek]

Up to you. If the price of getting SWMBO onboard for the week is to provide TV for her favourite show, and of course that meant I had to buy a better laptop for my nav programmes etc, who am I to object!
 
That's your choice, I do have a tv on board but haven't actually used it for years. However the thread asks for help, your reply doesn't exactly provide that help.

BTW mine's not a flat screen but perhaps do a search, there have been many threads on flatscreen tvs.

Although I have to admit I don't have a reasonable TV on board ....
 
An attempt to be constructive -I was in a caravan shop the other day and they had a good selection all 12v/240v I think -so I suggest you could do worse than take a look in your local caravan accessory store. At least it will give you some brands to follow up on
 
For gods sake, why the hell do you need a TV on the boat? Its supposed to be an escape!

Now don't blast me for not being helpful, I am, I'm trying to save you!

I would totally agree, but then I am not the only person on board, and if SWMBO/Son are willing to join me on board I feel that I should provide some of the creature comforts that other less hardened/keen sailors might wish for...
 
People who are aurally impaired may well find that being able to see a forecast is helpful.

I would suggest that you do not presume everyone else's viewpoint has the same limits as yours.

I have children and letting them watch limited telly can be a boon.
 
Quite agree....

Try doing a 24hr passage with a 7yr old, and you'll discover the value of a DVD player....

Thats not to say that they don't help with the sailing too.... its just that the attention/interest span is much more limited than an adult.... and sometimes SpongeBobSquarePants solves that problem nicely!

I'm sure the local caravan and camping outlet will have a good selection also a few on E-Bay.

We have a TV and DVD player on board, it's primary use is to keep the guests ankle biters in the saloon and entertained.

Also handy for weather reports as radio does not show the isobars too well and I rather like to make my own mind up about what conditions to expect.

You will need a good power supply and antenna, and perhaps an amplifier for the antenna depending on where you plan to sail; solder and treat/seal all antenna joints as clamps and screws are not the best connection.

Just to clarify - although SWMBO and daughter (sometimes son when he is home from uni) are quite happy out on the boat all day without any form of extra entertainment over and above driving or messing about in the dinghy, it becomes a different matter at night when in their words'there is nothing to do' - I can always find something to do pottering about the boat - but if I want to keep my 'crew' then I thought that it may be a good idea to have some extra form of amusement for such times.

No limits, wider boundaries I would say. The stunning sunset, the wildfowl, the trees on the river bank, the conversation with neighbours, can all be missed whilst watching East Enders, Omnibus version.
 
Is that what you are supposed to do on a Sunday afternoon ... no wonder I never get a berth - I'm still out sailing whilst the East Benders Omnibus is on! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It appears that the dedicated 12v LCD's go from 10.4" to 15" with no 12" step.

Seems that the most comprehensive ranges are in the Caravan shops.
Aerial is important,I've tried fixed Glomex type and small yagi(Loft aerial) neither of which were entirely satisfactory.The Yagi gave best overall results but was a pain to set up each time you used it.
I think Talbot posted that he was playing with some sort of inside aerial with a booster and was getting good results.
