Tom Goron 12 broke the record for sailing singlehanded over the channel in an Optimist, even though he was seasick, his time was 14 hours 20 minutes beating the record by 36 minutes.

In the OCC publication Flying Fish there is an article about the yacht Tamarind a Formosa 42 in the OSTAR. At 02.00 the yacht rolled, no date given, the EPIRB fired and a RCAF Hercules arrived, he asked what the winds speed was and was told between 60 to 70 knots. He replied "Hurricane force 12 starts at 64 knots". Where he got that idea from I have no idea:

Hurricane Category Sustained Winds
1 64-82 knots
2 83-95 knots
3 96-112 knots
4 113-136 knots
5 137 knots or higher

. . .Where he got that idea from I have no idea . . .

Hurricane Force 12 winds are the strongest winds on the Beaufort Scale and include all winds over 64kts.

Hurricane Categories (1-5) are subdivisions of these winds on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale.
