I intend spending 10 months cruising in the Thames estuary, starting from Brightlingsea and ending up at West Mersea. What time of year is the best time to set off, avoiding hurricanes etc.?

As long as the Strood doesn't hold the same dangers as the causeway to Osea Island. I heard some poor bloke damaged his keel on the roof of a submerged car.

Don't forget to spend some time looking at the Great Thames Barrier Reef. As a visitor, you are permitted to tie up to any of the chain of islands.

Excuse Me but I think you need to do some further research.
An expedition of this magnitude needs carefull planning.
Actually Old Boy your on the wrong Forum for this subject I believe there is a Forum now dedicated to this dangerous stretch of water.
Apparent dangers--- East Enders--Wide Bouys---Cockney Sparrers---Effluence---Geezers---Bloody Towers---Barriers---Blackfriars---Plus beware of Traitors Gate it could be your Gravesend!
Greenwich, mean time, could be a happy hour,or you could ExCel yourself at the Royal Docks! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Brasso, you're a shining example of the .... ooerr, can't think what.

I have a further question. I intend to "cross the pond" from Brightlingsea to Bradwell. How much fuel and fresh water do you think I will need?

For the crossing of this distance I would suggest installing your own fuel maker and buying one or two bottles of fizzy water.

best of luck. and stay safe out there

Crickey! thats all the way past Brightlingsea reach,Cudmore grove,Mersea flats. Then there,s the Virly channel .
Do you have Yachtmasters qualifications? If not only attempt this expedition during a leap year, on friday the 13th as long as there is an R in the month only if a black cat has crossed your path and you haven,t walked under a ladder. Allow no whistling on board, throw some salt over your left shoulder, keep your fingers crossed,no women should be allowed on board, fly a jolly rogger, look before you leap and remember two rights don,t make a wrong.

Apart from that I think the crossing is achievable if not a little risky.

Oh ! and notify the Coastguard and have the vhf mike permanently clicked on channel 16. Keep at least 4 cables off Cobmarsh Island. In fact keep a very long cable aboard attache one end to your stern on departure then you can use it as a nav aid on the return trip (should you actually make this unbelievable voyage)
Take care! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Have you booked your radio check with the CG?

And don't forget to tell him he is also loud and clear!
