10 mm, 8mm, 6mm rope; any good?

That's rated at a breaking strain of 800 kg, 10 mm Marlow double braid is 3690.

Even though I'm attracted by the price I think I'll give it a miss.

Search braid on braid on Ebay and look for a seller called uk-yacht-rigging-and-supplies
No connection to me, but I've had a few ropes off them and they seem well priced and very quick.

Depends on application. For wiring up a broken fence, or doubled, for a kiddies' rope swing, fine. But at that price? Picture how it'll degrade in sunlight, imagine its hateful handling when it's encrusted with salt. I've never, ever seen a genuine cheap-rope bargain.

money for new rope......

Don't buy any of it. I have used this stuff and it is very weak. Funny enough the smaller size seems the strongest so I still have some but it gets stiff and crumbly. Also still have larger sizes that I should dump but I do have not the heart to throw away something that looks like rope.
Thought I could get away with it but the inside just comes apart and leaves the outer braiding to do the work but this stretches.

Second that, also "boatropes" ebay seller. His is in imperial sizes, I think it's Canadian.

Is this some more of the famous "paper core" rope, then? Reasonable-looking braid over a core made of scrunched-up scrap paper just to bulk it out. I've heard of it, but never actually seen any before.

That's outrageous! What's the country of origin?

You find it at 'Pound Shops' and on Boot Sales. Sold in hanks (like washing line) and wrapped in plastic - with the ends carefully tucked out of sight. I discovered this stuff by squeezing the rope - feels too spongy - so opened the packet and pulled out an end. If ever there was a case for Trading Standards or Elf an' Safety ...

What's crazy about this, is that it must cost about the same to make imitation rope as normal stuff.

It is 'perimeter rope'
It sold for the purpose of roping off areas.
It is not pretending to be a climbing rope or a hawser.
800kg breaking strain is OK for lots of things.
Might even be useful on board, for low load applications where a thicker rope is easier to handle than a little bit of vectran.

I used to carry a 220m coil of 12mm polyprop lorry rope.
I never used it, but I could have kedged in the deepest bit of the English channel had I needed to.

I bought some of the cheap rope I think you're talking about from Go Outdoors about a year ago. Used some on the boat in lieu of main sheet to stop the boom flopping about. (wasn't using the boat at the time)
It lasted about 6 months before it degraded and fell apart in my hands. Knew it wasn't 'proper' rope when I bought it but still found it a bit scary how quickly it broke down

Sounds like polyprop.
Does not like UV!

So that's what News Corp did with the unsold copies of News of the World.:)

Never use polypropylene rope for anything serious, or at least not more than a couple of times.

Its main disadvantage is that it wears from the core outwards, so although after some use it may still look good on the outside, it can be completely shot on the inside.
