Yes, it has been unusually cold and windy (even for the East Coast) but as I post there are only 13 boats on the moorings in the Walton Channel - far less than in previous seasons.

Yes, you have to have rib/cuddy etc. to reach your boat but these are well sheltered, all states of the tide moorings at a very reasonable price.

Given the prices at other locations, I am surprised there hasn’t been a greater take-up.

Yes. Something is happening to sailing.
Possibly a combination of {time available/finance/two very poor Springs in succession }.
Many DIY launching clubs are way behind due to poor weather.
Hopefully May will bring some warmth and sunshine.
 
I don’t think it ever filled up last year, but people do seem to be getting later generally, including me. If nothing else, it makes coming and going from Titchmarsh easier.
 
Hi Daydream Believer. Deep water moorings St. Lawrence bay. Whom does speak to re these. I was in Maryland creek years ago and looking for somewhere to park my boat when I escape from Fox's.

We’re one of those boats not out yet sadly - looking very unlikely this season as I tripped on the stairs in October and severed an ankle ligament. Currently awaiting an mri to see next steps.

Surprised to hear only 13 though, usually fairly busy by now.
 
Launchings in Mersea are behind schedule, all pretty much because of the weather which has delayed fitting up and hindered launchings. Anno hasn't helped either.
 
First day of summer and one month on since I did a mast count in the Walton Channel.

After this spell of excellent weather there are still only 20 masts resident in the Channel, well down on the usual number at this time of the season.

Moreover, to date, there have been far fewer visitors to the Stone Point Anchorage and in Hamford Water.

So overall for this area, far less activity than is normal for this time of the year.

Is this a local anomaly, or is it the same all over the East Coast❓

The weather has been grim for almost as long as my memory runs, so I'm not surprised that there are so few out. I only got launched last week and I don't think I've missed much.

Time and tide waits for no man. Only 3 weeks to the longest day, the season is well advanced and for the last 10 days or so the weather has been very kind.

You are clearly made of better nautical stuff than me. I don’t enjoy getting cold and wet, though I would have forced my family out in any weather when leisure time was precious.
 
I'm a late launcher in the Walton Channel (22nd May) and I agree with John Alison that it has been a cold spring this year so I promptly headed south to Bradwell and Brightlingsea! I'm back now but I agree there are a lot of vacant moorings about. I'm glad to hear Nortada is on patrol and keeping an eye on things particularly as I am not a local.

Not so much on patrol but looking out of the lounge window with a telescope.

Yesterday, following a request, I was able to advise a moorer in the Channel that his boat didn’t appear to be down on its marks.

Another month on and the number of masts resident in the Walton Channel has grown to 24 - well below the number in previous seasons.

Additionally, many alongside moorings are vacant and the yards are packed with boats yet to launch, with little or no activity around them.
