I'm looking at a 30ft fin keel boat and I was planning to keep it in North Wales however a good friend of ours is talking about sharing mooring costs and keeping it down south so
1, there's somewhere for us to stop whilst visiting, as we see them quite a bit.
2, he can use the boat as he's local (Lyndhurst) and in return he can keep an eye on the boat, check on the mooring etc.

We would be looking at a budget of £2500 in total but checking PBO's guide this is half of what berths go for down there! Any thoughts, possible or are we being silly?

I did see RSYC, it's an option.

I just looked at Lymington residential moorings and it's within 7 miles, he's 8 plus he would have to own the boat, oh and the 3-20 year wait, shame really but good shout.

Who's responsible for the deep swingers?

I'm semi thinking IOW Folley pontoon and getting the ferry across, but I'll be worried the extra journey would put us off sailing as often.

Thanks, I've fired them an Email.

I'm torn between Solent sailing, with the advantage of having friends sail with us/a base for seeing them whilst sailing and Welsh/Irish sea sailing but us sailing more often but with me taking all the costs!

I've got some thinking to do!

Personally I love being 15 mins from the boat. It means I get to see her more often and sail at any and every opportunity. As it happens this year as been "challenging" due to work and famsily health problems. Without easy access I would not have sailed at all. Instead I've got all the maintainence work done plus about 10 day sails in. Local would be my shout.

Oh and for me, if the costs of a 30 footer are too high, buy smaller and older. Even if it's not as comfortable for longer trips, it will be all yours to love and cherish.

Look up Marchwood Yacht Club. Very convenient for Lyndhurst & also from M3/M27. We are a very well equipped club, have our own 15ton Travel Hoist, winter storage, Bar & Restaurant. My boat is 31ft LOA and for £1050 pa I get club membership, swinging mooring, winter storage .

You could consider Marchwood YC?
Maybe the clubs in Poole?

Of the 3 clubs that have marinas, only one would fit that price bracket for a marina berth, and dread to think how long the wait would be for that size boat. The two big sailing clubs do, however have readily available swinging moorings and no waiting lists for membership.

Edit: isnt there some deal on river moorings in Lymington for locals?

Negative.

The majority of HM moorings are on the river, others on Fortuna pontoon which is bows-to only and no services, or Dan Bran which is finger pontoons with power and water.

The rules are that you are only entitled to a mooring if your permanent residence is within 7 miles of the main church in Lymington, just to get on the waiting list. I live about 200m from the said church, but have been on the waiting list 10 years, for a 44' then 39' boat. Thinking of downsizing for lots of reasons, one being that the chances of getting a mooring are better for smaller boats.
