Where the 112.5 degrees comes from...

The 112.5 degrees is half of 45 degrees plus 90 degrees, i.e. just aft of directly abeam. It's an arbitrarily selected but internationally agreed viewing angle for the coloured arc cut-off for navigation lights on ships and aircraft.

Tweaker Blocks or Low Friction Rings?

I've been running Antal low-friction rings on tweakers of the J/109. They seem absolutely ideal - simple, light and reliable.

Anybody know anything about the Sail Racing Academy?

It's run by a nice guy - friendly and honest. He crewed on my J/109 for the first half of this season until his 40.7 was up and running. I think Flaming just about sums it up. The sailing is relying on professional skippers who I don't know so can't comment upon. Treat it as a learning route...

Repairs to chips on white mast?

That blistering is corrosion underneath the paint. That all needs to be cleaned back to bare metal as mentioned above but aluminium corrosion needs to be neutralized with Deoxidine-624 before the etch prime goes on.

    Mainsail batten Car’s sticking .

I think you need to swap that molded slider for a little car with balls or rollers since it's taking all the end-load from the batten and making lots of friction.

    What price Safety?

The coastal races run by JOG outside the Solent are Cat 4 unless they involve night sailing or a channel crossing, in which case they are Cat 3 (that seems to be the logic in their NoR). Alternatively the RORC coastal races outside the Solent are all Cat 3. This seems a bit odd since it is often...

Most popular one-design in the UK?

The Royal Southern also has J/80s that are used for various training and racing activities and I believe can be hired for regattas.

    RTIR multis

Previous years some have been seen at Hamble Point Marina, on the downstream pontoons. The bigger ones have been on buoys East of Cowes entrance or the green. As far as I know there's no specifically designated spot but being so wide they can't get into Cowes.

New to Racing. Suggestions for a £12k budget

I'd suggest that there would be great benefits to both enjoyment and learning to be a part of a fleet of similar boats. In Poole that would favor a J24, I think. There's also the matter of who's going to crew with you. In any popular one-design fleet you should be able to enlist club crew with...

    Hybrid diesel electric propulsion

A point not really addressed in the previous posts is the practice of running the main propulsion engine just to recharge the batteries on long passages under sail. It would seem attractive to have electric propulsion and a larger battery bank, charged from shore power for day-sailing activities...

    Emergency communication equipment

I would suggest you get two things; a PLB that uses the satellite network (not an AIS one) and can be on your belt or in a pocket all the time in case something really bad happens, like going overboard offshore at night, plus a handheld DSC/VHF (now mandatory for offshore racing) for just...

The return of the cruiser racer....?

I also agree that having two different "IRC Ratings" for Offshore or Inshore would be a great idea. I spent quite some effort (and money) sorting out my J/109's rating ahead of the Fastnet, dropping it to 1.004 to get just inside the Class 3 cut-off. This also included 4 spinnakers to give...

    wind hole

Hi. Jim Saltonstall's Race Training book talks about wind holes forming under cumulus clouds, well actually it's the wind hole that forms the cloud. Warm rising air does indeed form a gentle mini-tornado and as the air cools as it rises, so the clouds form. Glider pilots, free-flight model...

    Rodgers W27

The brochure shows "Isis Projects". I was once offered the moulds and design of a boat called an Isis 21 around the same time that the W27 was being built. I guess Isis Projects went out of business. I saw an Isis 21 at Warsash some years ago. Any relation?

    Fastnet 2017

I'll be there on JT. Finally settled on a crew of 7. Interesting couple of weeks getting the boat weighed and measured. Rating has come down from 1.013 to 1.004 and we get to take an extra spinnaker into the bargain. This is my 1st Fastnet but my kids have both done it before as have some others...
