    Galley floor repair

Well, I understood it. Anyway, various challenges. The galley floor is made up of two panels; the main one is about 6' x 3' and the forward, aft and stbd edges all finish under doorframes, a vinyl covered wall panel (glassed in place somehow) and the carpeted risers of the steps up to the...

    Galley floor repair

Absolutely nothing lifts out, that's the bloody problem! To get any of it out would involve dismantling the galley, the lower helm, the saloon and the midships cabin...

    Galley floor repair

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, as you can see it goes right up to the edges, so my router would never get in there - I'd be left with a 2" (at least) strip round the edges...

    Galley floor repair

Thanks, unfortunately putting another layer on top of the existing floor is not an option. You can see from the photo that there are radiused edges on the steps that are going to be a bugger to deal with...

    Galley floor repair

The years haven't been kind to the galley floor - water damage and drppoed things have left it stained and dented. It is a standard Sealine affair that looks to be plywood with a super thin teak and holly veneer or maybe just staining under a thick layer of polyurethane varnish. Lifting it to...

Ooops. KAMD43P pistons shouldn't look like this

Nothing I was aware of. The port engine was playing up - a bit of smoke, not making full revs - so a service was due, but the starboard lump had never missed a beat until now. I'd taken her out once before the day she blew up, with no problems, and before that she'd done a week's charter with a...

Ooops. KAMD43P pistons shouldn't look like this

Volvopaul will confirm, I'm sure, but I believe the rebuild kit includes pistons, liners and valves. At the price, I'd expect them to be gold plated.

Ooops. KAMD43P pistons shouldn't look like this

While the discussion on filtration is interesting, I do have a couple of pertinent questions: As the setup on this boat is identical to thousands of other similar boats from many, many builders, why do we not see shredded injectors and burnt pistons all over the place? If an injector gets...

Ooops. KAMD43P pistons shouldn't look like this

Hmm. So some history on these engines. Bought the boat back in 2004 (from memory) with a fresh full engine service by RK Marine. Once warmed up, the port engine annoyingly ticked over at about 800-850 rpm vs 600 or so for the other. Turned down the idle speed and the engine would stall if it...

Ooops. KAMD43P pistons shouldn't look like this

Excessive oil consumption while out on charter, then a sudden loss of power. Other than that, nothing. Still waiting for more news.

Don't know yet, sadly. That's number 2 piston, and it's melted...

    KAMD43P - time for a rebuild?

Someone doesn't want me to go boating this season... Actually, no idea, and we won't have until the engine is stripped down, really.

    KAMD43P - time for a rebuild?

Well, it looks like it is rebuild time after all. Seems like severe blow-by on two cylinders has been pushing oil out of the crank seals and through the vent to the inlet manifold. SO what wasn't getting burned was being dumped into the bellhousing and thence to the bilge. This is gonna be...
