Gentlemen, Thanks for sharing your experience. The posts from Boatless, Will and the detailed know how from Old Salt Oz will be the basis of our final technology. We are currently building the 30 ft performance cruiser with the potential to build more than one boat hence we are looking for some sort of the technology used in production yachts. We have encountered the problems which we have overlooked at the beginning as the assumptions seemed quite...

    looking for the chainplate supplier

Thanks. Initially I thought that they are custom made however I have seen exactly the same design on the boats from the different boatbuilders, hence I thought that it might be some standard make. Regards,
Victor

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

Thanks for your valuable advice. We have managed to fix the problem (was due to unproper insulation of the Morse cables and unproper operation of the engine power supply key resulting in the strong leakage current). It's good to know that the anodes need to be thorougly sourced. Kind regards...

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

Thanks for the advice. It's good to know that the replacement anodes shall be of the original quality. We have sorted the problem out and it boiled down to the engine insulation and the way the ignition/ electrical power key was being left by one of the skippers after the engine stopping. Kind...

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

Mike, Thanks a lot for your willingness to help. We finally have bought the used engine with the drive in perfect condition for the amount much less than the new SD, having also the additional stock of engine spares. Kind regards,
Victor

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

We have never considered that the anodes might be of such varying quality. After our extensive investigation I belive that the actual reason for the corrosion was the lack of the proper insulation of the SD at the Morse cables. Kind regards,
Victor

Phil, Thanks a lot for the information and your readiness to help. I know that PTFE and Nylon take a water and therefore Delrin / Acetal is widely used as it does not swell so much. I wonder if the combination of Delrin/ MOS would be available on the market. Could you give any indication upon...

    rudder bearings-new technologies? advice pls

We are considering the selection of the rudder bearings for our new design 30' performance cruiser. The steering systems suppliers offer usually Acetal (Delrin) roller bearings. These bearings are firstly expensive. Moreover we feel that in the view of the current technologies it's likely that...

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

I think we will follow your both advices as our prop is also bronze and from the discussion it's obvious that there is no doubt on the necessity of the sd insulation.
Victor

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

As we have seen on the other model (MD 2020) the cable for the gear control can be properly insulated at the gearbox connection. The rest of the assembly is probaly insulated by the proper washers, flange etc. I think that the most critical element is the insulation at the shafts (maybe...

replacement for Volvo 120S saildrive - Help

Hopefully your sd is OK at the end of season. I still look forward to receiving the results of you observation. As I have mentioned in my another reply it appeared that the sd was not isolated. It was probaly the primary reason for the corrosion, however we do not exclude that inapropriate anode...
