Progress now
Ok getting there now. Oil was so gloopy and thick the only device which would pump it was a yachtsmans small brass handpump. Even a Volvo mechanics electric oil pump could not move the oil. It took 5 hours of tedious work to extract oil. Annoyingly the engine does have a sump plug...
Hi Paul
Thanks for all the input. Will concentrate on shifting the mess first, or at least getting it to move. Boat is on outdrives so no gearbox in this problem.
Just been to boat. No loss of fresh water coolant so --- oil cooler ? Problem is oil/water mix is so thick it won't extract using my Pela oil change extractor. Have had suggestion of putting diesel fuel in to stop corrosion, it might also thin the gloop? Any thoughts to prevent further damage?
After many years of good service my starboard AD41 failed yesterday. I was on the plane and smelt oil. The oil pressure had dropped to 30psi. No problem with temperature, no alarms went off. Boat speed did not suddenly fall off. Pulled into the anchorage at Osbourne Bay and raised the hatch...
Re: Hi all What is a \"cone\"
If it helps this is a sliding sleeve (290 duoprop) which travels up or down to engage the cone for forwards or backwards.
As a rough rule I believe that if you have good gear engagement in one direction but poor in the other then a cone / sleeve wear problem...
Somebody was having a bad day having come out of St.Peter Port today. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a96/tim7777/P9120009.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a96/tim7777/P9120008.jpg
I think the leak you describe is possibly coming from the square ended brass fitting which holds the pencil anode? Remove while aflloat (a little sea water will come out) and renew the anode and grease the brass sqare headed holder and refit. This is if you have salt water deposits on the...
Ok I will put my hands up! I skippered Motala for the Ladies X Channel swim practice.
They swam in a relay from the Southsea monument to Ryde just west of the pier; an hour each. The ladies were very cold and quite brave, we crossed two shipping channels but had the co operation of Southampton...
Your mechanic is right, get the alternator and starter cleaned.
We had a sinking a long while back and I was advised to put the starter in a bucket of fresh water immediately prior to dismantling it and drying it all off. Dont try it with the alternator as parts go everywhere - leave it to a...
Thanks for all the replies !
Dalex - I have taken the crankcase breather and air filter off and spun the turbo but need to take the boat out again to see if I achieved anything - didnt feel a "crunch" though. Will compare the spin to the stb engine
Hlb - Yes I think I will change both filters...
Help! I have a Targa 33 with two AD41A engines. The port engine yesterday was reluctant to rev when going onto the plane and we noticed a pall of black smoke and fuel / oil? deposits in the water. We eventually did plane but the engine did not want to pull to full revs. (3200 was max) Out of...
I have heard of this problem. Had a friend with a water intake problem on a 290 outdrive. A crab grew in the intake pipe whilst boat not used and then too big to exit!
Please don't do it. You can never be 100% sure what weather/sea may crop up and the boat is too small to cope with such a passage if conditions worsen.
