What is the smallest yacht you have come across with a generator and a watermaker?

No experience of integrel but lotsa folks incl me manage fine with big alternators (not that big atm tho…). 4.5kva gen means another engine solely to run a max 375A (at 12v) alternator, best avoided esp for light use in tight spaces with awkward install and maintenance. Yanmar (maybe others?)...

    Atlantic crossing

    I’m at 32N 40w (700nm from land) and smaller-than-standard front-load washing machine runs fine.

What is the smallest yacht you have come across with a generator and a watermaker?

This postDoesn’t answer the OP query but these days no need for generator unless you have Aircon. Hi output alternators can top up batteries plus solar. Eco Tech Watermakers and similar can be DC not AC and are modular so it’s not “all busted” and high-volume AC watermakers often don’t get...

    Atlantic crossing

Re OP question… YM are senior ARC sponsors so Christine Keeler applies: they would say that wouldn’t they? I’m on 17th Transat now, first time with Starlink and writing this at 30N 46W bout 1k miles to any shore altho as Stingo once said to worried newbie crew “never more than a few miles from...

    Atlantic crossing

Stingo I am VERY SORRY about throwing a live flying fish down your open hatch and which jumped about and woke you while you were asleep on that Transat 15years ago. It was very silly and inconsiderate of me. I hope you can get over it and any other stuff but I completely understand if not...

Small, cheap wind generator worth it?

LED lights can often be drop-in swaps to tungsten? Reducing load and verifying/increasing battery capacity would be my choices. I’d always try avoid a noisy wind gen, esp on my boat, and even others at anchor.

Where would you look for a characterful , but possibly unseaworthy, old boat?

Um a play zone for kids in the garden ... I think better an old caravan, £400 ish

    Hydrogen power

Hum bit dark and pessimistic? Oil availability is way over 50years. Much better prospect than larking around with hydrogen gas

    AIS & ship’s identity

I think we all get the “invasion of privacy” thing. 1) It’s just the boat that’s tracked, not you personally 2) it’s always an option to stay on “silent” mode ...

    AIS & ship’s identity

Just to be clear, AIS etc is indeed "hardcore". In any collison - you look bad cos didn't broadcast boat name. Few will try calling a boat by its MMSI and wouldn't be expected to do so. And ... showing only mmsi indicates possible MOB thing. So it sounds like for (false) privacy reasons...

    AIS & ship’s identity

Normal VHF procedures use boat name. Yours deliberately hidden. I already know the MMSI of any nearby ship - it's part of the AIS info. Yeah, insurance companies would definitely play hardcore - calling out a bunch of numbers - since when was that VHF procedure I'd def make sure I had a...

Adding a second anchor to the main anchor.

I'm with the One Massive Anchor brigade. Having two risks twisting them and all sorts of extra nightmares which is fine in nicely boaty weather, not when you actually need the thing to Hang On. I seem to remember Mirabella5 had two anchors nicely fitted at the bows, but still didn't hold in...

    AIS & ship’s identity

The mmsi is the trackable unique thing, not the name? The name is what you'll be called by other ships/boats. My boat name is Mojo of which there must be hundreds. The mmsi is 202312279 and feel free to check it out! The "name" field doesn't have to be the full name of the boat but it's...
