Surveys / Engine & Rigging Inspections - newbie questions

Standing Rigging This is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string' The life of standing rigging depends on how long the yacht is in comission, how hard you sail it, whether the mast is left up throughout the laying up period, how well the riggigng is set up, whether the standing rigging is...

    Raymarine ST40 or NASA Clipper

I have had Nasa Clipper wind speed and direction units in both previous and my current boat. Both have been completely reliable and the guys at NASA are really helpful. I would be happy to use any NASA equipment. Excellent value for money.

    Boats for sale...their engines

If you are looking at at a boat for sale, always have a poke around to see if there is an aerosol of EASY START on board. If there is, then presume that the engine is in need of a major overhaul....adjust your offer to take this into account.

    Saildrives and missing propellers!

I have used a Volvo s drive for years and never experienced that problem. I just tighten everything up as tight as I can get it. I have more of a problem trying to get the allen key out of the prop spinner. The book says that when sailing a fixed prop needs to be in neutral and a folding prop...

    1GM10 leaking water pump

You might find that the seals have worn the shaft and just new seals will not help. Yanmar new shaft costs a fortune....I got one made by a local one man engineering firm who generally makes unavailable spares for vintage aircraft and racing cars....20quid!!

    Volvo service

I have just purchased a yacht with a 10 yr old Volvo 2010 with a full Volvo service history (last service Oct 2008). I tried to change the fuel filter because of the state of the fuel in the rusty tank looked more like tar than diesel and the filter looked rather rusty. I tried in vain. The...

Colvic UFO 27 MK2 vs Jeanneau Fantasia

I had a ufo 27 from 1999 to 2006. It was a tall mast version with lead keel with ballast bulb on the end of the keel. I have had experience of quite a few boats of around that sizr but must say that the ufo wos the one which I always felt most secure in. Sailing to windward at the top end of...

Salty Dog Yacht Info.........( not the barking kind!)

I owned Salty Dog from 1988 to 1996. She combined good performance with comfortable accommodation for a much below average, fot its size and type, price. I would reccomment them to anyone. An example of the hull strength was shown when I ran aground on hard sand and pounded for about 30 mins...

    Jeanneau 2000

Thanks for the reply. This is how I presumed the tack was attached and what you say confirms that Jeanneau has assembled the bowsprit incorrectly! I shall drill ot the rivets and reverse the direction of the attachment. Many thanks.
