Weatherfax - book to help interpret weatherfaxes

Thanks all, I already know about fronts & isobars and how to read at a basic level. I also appreciate there are some useful online instructions, I was more looking for a book to keep by the chart table to help read more into the charts when the internet is not available. Perhaps the level of...

Weatherfax - book to help interpret weatherfaxes

So following on from previous forum hits such as; What to buy / How to set up SSB HF/Shortwave Recievers for Weatherfax and where/how to install arial; SSB - Weatherfax Aerial placement Now I need recommendations for interpreting the weather fax information. I have base knowledge (from old...

    SSB - Weatherfax Aerial placement

Just as an update on the above, connecting the wire aerial to a bolt on a chain stay was going to be a bit of a convoluted nuisance. In the end I firmly clamped the wire aerial between two nuts on a through deck bolt from the alloy toe rail. The stantions and the guard wire are all fixed to the...

Girl, 15, dies in Southampton boat crash

That would rule out the next America's cup and SailGP from hosting an event in the Solent then!

    Beautiful wooden yacht build.

Looks great - would be a great feeling to have the time, space and skill to pull off such a nice home build!

Why no Macgregor 26's in the West of Scotland?

Thats just the thing, you might not plan to be going out in rough weather and it might not be in the forecast. Doesn't mean you won't experience it. Case in point - anchored last year in Areceid Moor, Rona. Navtex and shipping forecast was for 15kts. We set off round the top of Skye, heading...

Why no Macgregor 26's in the West of Scotland?

I've sailed the west coast for years and it's far from uncommon to get walloped with an un-forecasted 35+kts. Not the place for toy boats. Sounds like you want either 2 boats; a rib and a cruising boat or a motor cruiser really.

    Synthetic rubbing strakes

This is the route I'd probably go - on the presumption it's just for looks, remove all scrappy wood and replace with vinyl stripes or paint.

Does anyone know what these 2 large holes in my transom could be for?

Topeedo launching tubes? I'd suggest they were backup for draining the cockpit in case the proverbial hit the fan.

    Ghost Ship aground at Ballycotton

Practice for the fire crew? - they would know it was low consequence for not getting the fire out quickly so could perhaps practice different techniques for their efficacy? (Also going by the ex forces fireman I know - he'd probably find it fun!)

    Carbine Hook question

No, I'm afraid that will be insufficient. Normally you would have the rope or chain pendant over a stout cleat on deck.

    Corrected time records....

I wonder if you could just use Strava?

    Sail GP

Often the word amazing is over used, but the racing footage really is quite amazing - I thought it was on fast forward / 3x speed when first started. 90kmh boat speeds and tight passes, nail biting edge of seat stuff.

Crosby C links - peening studs

I did it one spring when in the boat yard - chain dropped to the ground and used a masonry lump hammer as a make shift anvil. repeated heavy blows got the "pins" hammered flat with no play. As per my previous post, getting the chain into the link and the two halfs lined up ready to battered...

Crosby C links - peening studs

I found I needed a pretty heavy hammer and a punch to get it set. I used on 8mm chain and it was a pig of a job.
