    FIRE DOWN BELOW

Angle grinding and some welding. All in a large wooden boat. Usual precautions plus a good hose down of the bilges afterward. Three hours later an inferno. Everything gone including every power tool known to man. In a boatyard, not insured, now not just broke but in debt. Risk...

    drive shaft

Thanks everyone for your advice, I've followed thro on each one and now have the answer clear in my mind. Just thought I'd mention to Pheran; I've never found lorry UJs to be anything other than in excellent condition - regular servicing - but not so with domestic vehicles. Spannerman; The...

    ENGINE/PROP SHAFT ANGLE

Thankyou Clifford. Yes, I shall have to pull the engine forward until the angle difference is split. But this can only be approximate and I wonder if you experienced any vibration in your own set up and what speed you ran it at.

    Something for boaters ( maybe)

Would these be the same glasses to wear before you go below to watch your flat screen TV. Have all of you reduced the sea to a caravan park? Are you all so inane? Why not tell the cretin to turn his music? off. Not down; off.

    drive shaft

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. The prop shaft remains standard and terminates inboard into the thrust bearing. On the engine side of the thrust bearing is the first UJ operating at around 5deg. The other UJ (whose flange bolts onto the g/box output flange) operates at a slightly different...

    ENGINE/PROP SHAFT ANGLE

Thanks; in your own experience - your ketch - was the engine and prop shaft parallel? And what opinion would you have over the possible vibration two UJs operating 'out of tune', when their speed is as low as say 500rpm (which is about where I shall be operating)

    ENGINE/PROP SHAFT ANGLE

I intend using a shortened lorry prop shaft and a standard thrust bearing to connect my 48hp 6cyl 1500rpm Lister with 2:1 reduction, to drive a shaft and 22"prop. The angle of the prop shaft is say, 5deg to the horizontal whilst the engine I'd prefer level. My question is, therefore; will...

    Another question on sheathing

In the 70's I sheathed a sailing smack with a two pot material that when on and dry had the 'feel' and texture of a lorry tyre. It was light blue in colour; in adhered to the wood with tenacity and I was told that it had been developed for the lining of grain shutes. I was not adivised to...

    Ex ships lifeboat

Re: Ships\' lifeboats In the process of "approving and issue of specifications" would the BoT have kept records, do you think. And would you know if the MCA inherited such records for the likes of me to gaze at? I'd be curious to know how they kept the boats from sagging. And how they...

    Ex ships lifeboat

Yes, of course youre right, I just wouldn't have expected mahogany to have lasted so well - albeit a Honduras variety. Would it have had a sail? it's shaped more like an ark. Why would most have been clinker built in softwood and others dd in mahogany?

    Ex ships lifeboat

I was so impressed by the response to an earlier question, I thought I'd see if anyone can shed any light onto this one. I am restoring an ex 30ft Mahogany double diagonal ships life boat. I was told that it was probably pre war but I've no idea why anyone would think that. It has lifting...

    wooden hull sheathing

Thanks Boatman, I've sandblasted the hull and buzzed it over with the heaviest grit paper I could find. The hull is reasonable sound but seams have opened as it dries out. I shall fill the seams with 'Epoxy Lightweight Filler'. The cloth is Fothergills Engineered weave of 720grams...

    wooden hull sheathing

Thanks Michael I found the sites interesting and very informative, albeit they told me things I didn't want to hear! Peter, as no glue or paint penetrates timber more than a mm anyway, then it sounds like Methylated spirits will work well. I'll experiment.

    wooden hull sheathing

Thankyou so much for your advice and information everyone. Meanwhile I have been to see a 70ft ex mgb sheathed with exactly the same products I'd proposed. And it was an outstanding success. Regarding the importance of dried wood, I wondered if the 'moisture-curing-alluminium-rich...
