    What's Your Sailing Experience

Certainly applies in my case. Not so much fear & excitement as astonishment. On my third time out after joining the local sailing club, and on my first time at the helm, I managed a spectacular capsize. It was rather gusty at the time. In hindsight it must have been the best experience I could...

    Testing automatic lifejackets

+1 I inherited an oldish Hammar a few months ago but had never checked it out. Now thanks to prv, Shorn 100 & other contributors I am now reassured of it's serviceability. :) Ron.

    Scariest food ever eaten.

On a River cruise in the Ukraine, when visiting a small fisherman’s island. The locals provided us (for a small cash donation - to be left under the plate) with a very basic lunch. I tried an open sandwich, which I assumed to be white fish topped with cucumber; the white fish was in fact pure...

    Stupidest thing you've had stolen

Some years ago, travelling on an Italian corridor train, a guy brushed past me and took my wallet from the back pocket of my shorts. I chased him down the platform and he tried unsuccessfully to vault over the exit gate. He was still lying there as I reboarded the train and as the train was...

    stainless stuck in aluminium

I would have thought that would be sufficient. I remember that the removal of chrome plated gudgeon pins from aluminium alloy pistons, was the common practice of immersing in a bucket of hot water, often below boiling point.

I was sent out to buy non slippery oil

As a new apprentice, I'd already been caught out by the "long weight" and the "left handed screwdriver", but when I was sent for a set of "1/2 inch Whitworth left hand thread taps", I decided enough was enough and went for a stroll around the various assembly bays. One of the foremen asked me...

    ....All's well

Why is it that it's "7 o'clock" and all's well"? Not in this case, but generally. Why not 5, 6 or 8 o'clock?

Rapid clicking noise when I turn the key...

Sounds like the starter solenoid not making a good contact. You could try giving it a "gentle" tap.

Can moboers swim, I bet yotties can?

You're in good company then. When John "Skipper" Woodhouse MBE of Caister Lifeboat appeared on the Terry Wogan show, Terry said "I believe you never learnt to swim". Skipper replied "Why should I learn to swim? I've got a boat". (Quotes may not be word perfect - I'm just going on memory).

    woodruff key?

To get the right size, could you not press some plastic material (say bluetack) into the Keyway on the shaft to take a pattern? If it was removed with care, it should give you a good idea of the radius and depth of the key. You could get the thickness using feeler guages.

    What's a "Magic Sponge"?

The "Magic Sponge" was always called for at football matches when a player was injured. I'm going back to the time, when the game was played by men (not drama queens). If the magic sponge didn't work, then the bucket of cold water was poured over the player. If there was still no response - he...

    Where has the Lounge gone

I also thought The Lounge had disappeared from the face of the earth - until I logged in. I guess that applies to some of the other forums, and I'm sure I'm not the only one whose made the same mistake. :o
