    Mahogany?

May I add my vote for Iroko too... The whole of our Finesse's hull, including the whole of the centreline structure including a laminated stem and apron are all Iroko. I've used it for repairs on other projects and the grain ragging can be mitigated by careful selection as the previous poster...

    RNSA 14'

A full plan must exist somewhere.... A quick online search found this image. I know that it is expensive to get plans held by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich copied, but this is an option. Their site is not easy to navigate and from my own research into the 25ft Motor Cutter they do not...

    RNSA 14'

Just a suggestion but could you not haul your old 'plate out and make a template from it? It may be slotted to fit over the pivot bolt so could be lifted out without removing the bolt? Bill

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

OK, a new BEP VSR (now a DVSR) is on order as until now the original was trouble-free for ten or so years. I've managed to redeem both the deeply discharged batteries, to a certain extent, by a series of long charges at a low rate although the engine battery (the older of the two) has been...

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

Thank you everyone who has replied to my questions. Just to be clear, when it was working correctly the VSR only takes charging current through its contacts. At rest and whilst the engine is being cranked its contacts should be open and starting current is drawn from the engine start battery...

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

I've still got the 1,2 both switch that I removed when installing the BEP cluster :giggle:

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

I see now the reason for having the VSR on battery side of the switch; to enable external charging of both batteries from one source. On 'Enfys' there is no external charger connected and nothing is connected directly to the batteries, i.e. upstream of the isolators. The VSR was fitted about...

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

When I disconnected the engine start battery I heard the VSR click open and then just dabbing the lug onto the battery post it could be heard closing and opening. The voltage sensing circuit seems to have failed. The spec for the VSR says it should close when start battery gets to 13.7V. The...

    Batteries discharged by faulty VSR

We have a two-battery (engine start and 'house') on 'Enfys', both batteries are 110Ah and are charged by an alternator on her Beta 20. The isolators are BEP make with separate switches for each battery and an emergency paralleling switch. There is a VSR connected between the two batteries and...

Are there still floating pontoons at Saundersfoot?

As a mooring holder at Saundersfoot we can confirm that the pontoons are currently still in the inner harbour.

    RNSA 14 information/register

Our local mooring officer at one of the inlets on the Haven here in Pembrokeshire has one in almost permanent layup. She's been fitted with a bermudan rig.

Dried-out clinker: to salt or not?

Our Finesse 24 had an enforced period ashore during the first lockdown and could not be launched till the middle of July 2020. I stopped her from opening up by spreading old towels and sacking in the bilges and under the furniture - to waterline height. These were kept damp with fresh tap water...

    Copper Rivet Staining

A traditional varnished finish will not be as durable as paint when and if continuously exposed to sunlight. Our Redwing is dry-sailed and sits in a shady spot with an overall cover to protect her when not in use. Used like this the outer hull finish will last a decade without much attention...

    Copper Rivet Staining

The staining around the fastenings is caused by a slow oxidisation of the copper fastenings and is visible through a varnished finish. I feel that one has to accept this as the ‘patina’ of a beautiful clinker built boat. This is our Redwing; just over thirty years old. If the oxidisationis...
