As does the drain plug. Metal drain plugs are sometimes an option offered by the manufacturer.

That happened on my system. The display was blank and none of the buttons would operate the heater. Turned out to be the display/controller unit itself had failed. It was easy to diagnose by checking the wiring and voltages as shown in the link I posted. Got the controller and service parts...
