We also once had a lawnmower with the wind-up spring thingy on the top. When the spring failed I used to start the mower with a socket and drill on the end of the crankshaft - it was however, a mains powered drill.

Before the marina was built in Watchet Harbour, we laid several mooring trots (or ground chains) to accommodate IIRC about 50 boats.
We were very lucky in that one of our members was a scrap dealer and located enough for the job at minimum cost.

You've had plenty of advice regarding tensions etc.
But, have you tried a ball-point needle. When I first tried a bit of sailmaking, the was the first item I was advised to get.

Many years ago when I first used polyester resin, we used kiddies potties to mix the resin in.
They have a handle so the heat from the hand does not make the resin go off quickly and, being flexible, set resin can be broken out of the potty.
