We had an original Selden Gas strut in our boom strut. It could barely hold the boom+sail + bag. It drooped. We replaced the strut by one from SGS Engineering which is nominally adjustable, but stronger than the Selden version. Mechanical dimensions identical.
It now supports the boom adequately...
A lot of this kind of choice depends on whether you want to grill anything or make decent toast.
Most cookers supplied on "!EU!" built boats are non-grill. Which I find a PITA.
We have been using a "Ridge Monkey" for toast and toastie-like concoctions for a few years as an alternative grill...
The "chandlery" is also a mile different from the old "Bosun's Locker". Wall to wall designer clothing at marine prices+
Most of the folk down there are for food/drink & shopping, not for boats or anything to do with them.
However, it helps keep the place viable...
It was a mains one as I have not purchased a cordless version. (yet?) With care and 2 batteries of the lithium persuasion I can't see any great problem of one as a back-up?
I watched a motorcycle disc-security lock removed. Took well over 5 minutes through hardened steels. Cordless is still...
Thanks for all the response. I think the main point of my post was to get folk thinking about the problem, ideally trying out their planned methods on some scrap rigging- wire or bottle screws or whatever. Knocking out various clevis pins sounds the easiest option. Some would be very simple and...
What an ancient thread!
Had a 1988 Sunrise 35 for 8 years. Good solid boat, predictable behaviour and quick in light airs. Two Norway north sea crossings. A little on the dark side interior wood wise but well fitted out. The rig was masthead, Super-Spars. Most of the deck equipment was...
Interesting.... we usually sail two up, not with six bods ready to spring into action. Different ball game?
My main point is " try out what you have" and re-assess?
Generic lever arm point (not scissor style) cutters. Probably not aimed exclusively at wire, but like most hand tools need both hands free to operate. A salutory experience I have to say. One can spend twice the price on a good cordless cutter on a big lever armed two handed device.
hence my...
I have , today.
We have just renewed our standing rigging so I thought I would see how our cutting tool
copes with the wire. (450mm lever cutters)
Not really well enough.
Our mast is stayed with 8mm and 10mm dyform wire (with 7mm D2 and 7x 19 backstay).
My cutter cut 7 and 8mm wire with 2 or 3...
I don't work on the bridge of such a vessel, however " if to starboard "red" appears - it is your duty to keep clear. OOW orders turn to STBD ? to pass astern of the yacht?
If I were on the yacht I would see this big boy coming in from my port side. Hmm, just maybe turn to STBD...
