Thanks all for that very useful information. The diagram looks just about a perfect copy. The identifying marks on the alternator have unfortunately worn off completely
I have a prestolite alternator and an Adverc battery management system.
I am attaching a picture of the alternator which at present has just 2 connections made . The bolt at 3oclock is +ve and the smaller one at 5 oclock is -ve.

You could have made a good saving by anchoring rather than harbours.... but you were single handed. Getting ashore and seeing the ports and meeting people make the journey and keep your sanity. I think you did exactly the right thing.
