    Sleeping on the job?

Oh seriously? I used to be a regular on this forum, 20 years ago or more. It had its fair share of judgemental pompous armchair sailors then, but now it just seems overrun. Pip is a hugely successful yachtswoman, she’s talented, down to earth (I nearly wrote “grounded” but thought better of it)...

    Start Point sea state

You were in the race then. There’s an inshore passage, close enough to chuck a hobnob ashore, but you can play the gauntlet with pots which can be semi submerged when the tide’s running, just lurking ready to anchor you by your stern gear. Which would be vexing. Slack water at Start is...

    On board in yard

Trouble is, if a boatyard “officially” allows you to stay on board then there’s a risk of a community of liveaboards developing, on those somewhat dishevelled boats that come ashore, and on which every bit of “work” that is done usually results in them being less likely to ever be seaworthy...

    Curtis Marine Insurance

Very good, not so competitive on some commercial stuff (I don't think they really want that work) but privately I've used them for years and find them very well priced and pleasant to deal with. Did a like for like quote with Towergate this season and Curtis were 30% cheaper for the same cover...

    Mystery Boat

I don't know, but she looks American to me. I think if she was European someone would probably have identified her by now.

    South Devon and Cornwall headlands

Without knowing what sort of boat you're sailing, I would respectfully advise a little more caution at Start Point, and to give it a bit more than half a mile off at anything other than slack water or very benign conditions. It's not going to sink you but it can be quite unpleasant if you cut it...

    Plastic classics?

Here's a little observation for you lot. Pretty much all of these boats are a boatyard and hoist operator's worst nightmare, with their swept back forefoots and keels, with a centre of gravity forward so that they tend to want to fall on their knees when you're blocking them up. I ran a yard for...

    Any ideas please? 3 x visitor berths - Plymouth - 25th July

There's a new landing pontoon for tenders, installed by the Cattewater Harbour Commission. It's free, and really convenient. Just on the port side as you head towards Sutton Lock, inside the commercial/ferry/trip boat pontoon. They also have some visitor moorings off Mount Batten. 01752 665934...

Navigating the upper reaches of the Fowey River

JDC has given you all the interesting bits really, but just a clarification - it's Penpol Creek opposite Golant, with the derelict boats in it. Not much up there but pretty at HW. Pont Pill (or Pont Creek) is much further downstream, an offshoot of the main harbour on the Polruan side. Might...

    Cornish Yawl/Cutter 24?

Hi, Are there any owners of Cornish Yawls or Cutters out there? I've a notion that I might fancy one but I don't know much about their sailing performance. I've had various boats over the years including gaffers but I'd like something small and easy on the eye for pottering about Falmouth. A...
