    Fuel costs in Spain

Gouvia marina in Corfu - really working well for us, Jeremy. Lots of protected waterways, stunning anchorages, surprisingly good f+b and the Greeks are utterly charming. Plus it’s actually very inexpensive! In our fourth Ionian season atm and planning to explore Croatia a bit in 2023 - but will...

    Fuel costs in Spain

2.12 in the Ionian a month ago, 1.82 today - heading in the right direction!

    Gyro install

Indeed it is, very informative and excellent advice for anyone contemplating a gyro installation.

    Security Cameras on boat

Yep, I’m starting to come to that conclusion too, especially if I want more than one camera. Thanks for this input, all makes sense.

    Security Cameras on boat

Sadly I think the mobile phone companies have all changed their contracts and many are even reneging on older contracts where they think they can. Three have certainly refused to allow me more than 12GB a month abroad despite my phone original contract being unlimited abroad. And apparently I’m...

    Security Cameras on boat

That’s an option but, certainly in Greece, the market is much less sophisticated than in the UK. Easy to find a 10GB one month SIM for a holiday type scenario but there don’t seem to be the data only little bundles for c€4 a month or the prepaid 24GB 24 month type options. As an example, the...

    Security Cameras on boat

This has been a very interesting thread! I keep my boat in Corfu and live in the UK. Keeping an eye on the boat through the winter, whilst I’m in Hampshire, would be fantastic! To this end, last week I ordered the Reolink Go with the built in SIM etc - will buy at least one more once I’ve set it...

Med boaters - will you get to your boat this year?

I’m pretty hopeful too. Last year it seemed a bit gloomy and doomy in March / April, but we managed to fly down to Corfu on July 4th (appropriately enough!) and didn’t return to the UK until Oct 1st. We ended up having one of our best ever seasons, covering about 1000 nm around the Ionians and...

    Italy

Oh dear, that’s pity!! Actually I think the truth of it is that there’s the SoF, Balearics, Costa Smeralda and then the rest of the Med - oversimplification on my part I’m sure, but broadly speaking berthing in the former three areas seems to be about double the rest of the Med. The...

    Italy

We did about 15 years in Mallorca (Cala D’or) and for the last 10 years or so have moved steadily east - Mahon, Sardinia (Portisco and Santa Teresa di Gallura), Marina di Scarlino, Marina D’Arechi and now Gouvia in Corfu. Lots of useful perspectives on this thread in terms of the pros and cons...

    Porto Montenegro

Did a reccy there about five years ago and was impressed. Large, smart new marina which seemed very well designed. Plenty of great restaurants and upmarket retail opportunities, if you like that sort of thing - reminded me a bit of an oversized Port Adriano. I got a quote for an 18m boat which...

    New Anchor

Yes, that’s a good point! Last season when in the Aeolians I tied to a buoy with one main warp (20mm) and a back up of the same size. We had supper, a few bottles of wine (there were nine people on board!) and went to bed. There was a mild swell overnight but nothing that kept anyone awake. Over...

    New Anchor

+ 1 for Rocna. I have a 55kg one on my Sq 65 and it holds well. As has been said earlier, one of the negatives of the Bruce is the difficulty with which it penetrates the seabed when anything other than soft sand. The Rocha has a sharp fluke which I’ve found gets into most types of seabed. I...

Pros and Cons of 1 2 or 3 to choose to attach to shackle.

I agree - some stainless seizing wire to keep the pin in place and then 3. At least then if the anchor happened to snag somehow, you’d have a fighting chance of the shackle not breaking if you had to give the anchor rode a bit of a tug with the boat.

Protection from 3rd party claims by owning your boat via a company

Yes, that’s a very good point which had occurred to me. Guess the only caveat is that the values around boating (esp larger boats, obviously) can be quite a bit bigger. But the point is well made for sure. The lawyers just seem to be inclined to recommend complex schemes to clients (for the...
