    Remote boat monitoring?

Another endorsement from me for Vircru. Been using for over two years. Reliable and well-made kit.

    Raymarine i60 Wind not working

I have had similar issues with intermittent periods of not working, interspersed with being fine. My understanding is that it is usually a sign of corrosion on the masthead unit pins/connector. Removing the masthead unit, cleaning the contacts and reinstalling resolved the issue for us.

6hp Outboard - something good please.

I had a 6HP 4 stroke Yamaha to replace a defunct 5HP 2-stroke. Was very happy with both on a Zodiac 2.85m. When the 6HP was stolen (from home, not the boat) I thought long and hard about how I used the dinghy, weight and ease of use for children. In the end I opted for an electric outboard...

    Local PSA screening

As a Medic with an interest in this area, I might chip in: PSA is greyscale with a large overlap between benign (normal) and the levels at which cancer is likely. Tony Blair when PM promised any man who wanted a PSA could have it.... It is but one aspect of checking for prostate disease...

    MDL Freedom Berthers

I have noticed a distinct change in approach to Freedom Berthing this year. In previous years, reasonable notice and advance booking was straightforward and easy, and arranged through my home MDL marina. Not so this year. Firstly, I had to contact other marinas directly. Two of the three...

    Boat & Yacht security systems.

I have been using a low-cost reliable solution for the past few years - www.maxmon.co.uk No connection with the company other than being a very satisfied customer. The solution allows me to monitor my boat and remotely turn things on and off (like a dehumidifier or the lights). It...

Possible dangers of Stugeron sea sick tablets!

Stugeron (a branded name for generic cinnarazine) is a remarkably effective and safe drug. It doesn't work for everyone and some individuals find it makes them too drowsy. One major advantage is that it doesn't prevent adaptation to movement-induced nausea - in other words, it allows the...

AIS Class B transponder linked to iPad Air 2

I have an iPad Air2 which gets NMEA data including AIS via an on-board WiFi network - in my case Redbox, acquired originally to integrate systems and provide least cost routing for mobile comms. The AIS data over NMEA works very well but as Halo points out Navionics doesn't, at present...

    Pump them full of Stugeron

As a practising medic I fear that the advice you were given was erroneous and potentially dangerous. I would disregard it as either a practical solution for seasickness.

    Adverc or Sterling?

Adverc served us well and very happy with it.

    Mailasail Red Box

I am a satisfied user of the Mailasail Redbox with no connection to the company other than to say that I have been consistently happy with the advice and help provided over many years. I run the Redbox as the communications hub on board - with Iridium, 3G dongle and external WiFi connections...

    Water Filters

General Ecology filter - perfect tasting water for over a decade (with the odd filter change!) from a variety of sources. Tastes as good as bottled water and a fraction of the cost.

    Ipad mounting

I have an iPad in a Lifeproof Nuud case - waterproof and with nothing obscuring the screen. www.lifeproof.co.uk This then clips in and out of a Lifeproof holder which has standard sized mountings on the back for things like a RAM mount. I have a rail clipped RAM mount ball by the wheel and...

    Maxsea or Navionics for iPad?

Paul I'm no electronics guru, but can tell you how I set up my system. Raymarine ST60 use the Raymarine proprietary Seatalk protocol so it requires translation into NMEA before being sent over WiFi. Although there may be other more elegant solutions the one I have used is the Raymarine...

    Maxsea or Navionics for iPad?

I have used both on the iPad - not as primary navigation tool but as a backup and for use in the cockpit. I run an onboard WiFi with all nav data multiplexed over the network so the iPad has access to AIS and instrument data. MaxSea is excellent (though requires an additional cost feature to...
