Re: DIY Digital Chartplotter... if so simple ?????
There are a number of ways to send VGA data without wires, but the main problem is the display. Excellent displays are available but only if you are prepared to pay.
A Wireless Navigation Display (note: link is a pdf file)is not a bad...
I am all for lighthouses and other navigation aids, but someone has to pay for them and no one wants to.
The larger ships will no doubt argue their way out of paying dues because of electronic navigation and slowly the lighthouses will close. I remember not long ago when the gov was trying to...
As Fireball says, the GPS will come with a disk that will create a virtual 'com' port on your PC. All you need to do is tell the nav program you are using to look at the correct com port. (Tip, always plug the GPS into the same USB port on you're computer, if you plug it in to a different USB...
There are a number of ways to add radar overlay to a PC system. The Nobeltec system is reliable and for a 2kw system will cost around £1400 for the Scanner and Software.

PS I recently was told that with numbers lock on hold down "Alt" then press 2 4 8 one at a time this gives you a degrees sign as in 51°35.654n 006°26.352w Was I the last person in the world to find this out?

Re: WiFi up the mast - Continuing saga
May have missed something in the posts but if you want to connect 1 PC to wireless broadband in the marina use a wireless bridge. For greater range you can use either a internal or external ariel but there is no need to start running kit up masts. If you...
As others have said a normal card reader will not read a C-Map cartridge. What you need is the C-Map card reader. If you do not have a supported navigation package such as Raymarine Raytech or Maxsea you will need the PC Planner software as well. You can purchase the C-Map PC Planner kit online...
Nice to have both but if I had to choose in Fog I would choose Radar every time. I think one of the problems with Radar nowadays is that people do not know how to use it. Learn to use Radar properly and it becomes indispensable.

The price you quote for the Raymarine S/W is for the full Pathfinder kit which you don't need. The software by itself is around £400. Still expensive just for planning. As mentioned above the C-Map Card Reader and Planner software is a much better bet.
