Re: binoculars with compass & rangefinder
Wouldn't know what to recommend, but certainly not Steiner. I have a Steiner Commander and the rubber totally resolved to some sticky soft gumbo. Needed to cover it with spi repair tape. Sent it for repair a year ago and paid euro 145 for new rubber...
Re: Chart plotters V laptops with appropriate soft
Really a good question of where these charts are headed. I have been wondering the same. I had a good chance to compare many different electronic charts, raster and vector by helping many friends getting their equipment to work and I have toyed...
Re: Chart plotters V laptops with appropriate soft
I have now been using both an integrated hi-end chart plotter and laptops with MaxSea for four years in various areas and conditions. The net effect being that I have come from favoring dedicated plotters more towards PCs. All seems to have...
Not easy, but I'd stick to the original plan.
Along the same kind of thought chain, I could have stayed on another year and another year to pile up more money and maybe a higher safety margin. But then that goes off your healthy part of life for easily more than it is worth.
Your original plan...
Not sure if you noticed that pactor controllers are available directly from SCS, the inventor of the PactorII/III. www.scs-ptc.com
The IIex is €600 there and with PactorIII license (recommended) it is €770.
Still a lot of money but maybe a touch below what you said.
Anyway, the website is...
Don't know most boats that you list in enough depth to give you a good advise, but we had a Rival 41 for 14 years and she was a fantastic and very seaworthy boat. Not as much space as modern boats, but you can take her anywhere. A Peter Brett design she sailed by herself and very smooth in a big...
been away on my boat, just now seeing your question.
Years back, before most of the nice sailing areas in the US become ZERO discharge zones, many larger boats had complete sewer treatment tanks, they would be loaded with macerated stuff and then accelearte the natural process, by stirring and...
Don't get too worried about the handling issues of a larger boat. There are couples like the Dashews happily operating 80 footers. Equipment, type of boat all matters a lot. Cost, I think usually establishes an upper limit and cost goes up almost by the cubic. Even if you buy a very large used...
I really agree with you that the master of the container ship was risking way too much being satisfied with such a narrow CPA. Also the relatively high speed difference between the cargo ship and the yacht are a problem, as the big ship's ARPA has little time to establish a reliable vector of...
When you say we have been advised not to use VHF, who do you mean with we and who's advising? Use of VHF seems quite common practise and I find a lot of comercial shipping is using VHF to clarify certain sitiuations. I agree though that it might be confusing and certainly not error free. But as...
do you mean the article in YM or YW? I don't have a YM as I buy it on occasion, butthe same story was in Yachting World amonth ago, and I agree it is quite strange and raises more questions than it answers. The latest YW has a follow up on radar and ARPA usage, which seems to make even less...
Just saw your post and that you quoted my post on Bruce vs. CQR and thought I'd clarify some more. I don't think a Bruce anchor is generally better cutting into weed, compared to a CQR. Looking at them I'd think it should be the other way round.
I ended up with the Bruce, not because the CQR...
according to your definition we must have a buffer-holding tank, as it can either be pumped at a pumping station (have yet to find one) or out into the sea. With a 100 Litres and a 75 Litres tank we seem to be ok for about a week with 4 people.
