Problem: gear won't shift from reverse to neutral, some improvement after draining gear oil

on a polyester sailboat, is it necessary to have an external antenna for iridium go? Obviously the sales guy wants to sell me one. Experience, anybody?

I love to work with epoxy but one of the problems is it becomes (yellow and) brittle upon prolonged exposure to sunlight. Maybe that's why they add black pigment?

On a Lewmar hatch the locking system is, I should say was, glued to the perspex. Probably 12 years old. Now the thing came off. Glue is some hard black stuff. Is it possible at all to glue it back on? If yes what glue to use? Or replace altogether?

there is an EPIRB on my brand-new second-hand boat. The battery is overdue. Can I have the battery replaced and the MMSI re-programmed?
If so, would that be smart?

Does it make sense to install (and regularly inspect etc) hydrostatic release units on liferafts aboard a 57 ft yacht? Has it happened that a yacht sinks so quickly that it is not possible to launch a liferaft?

Thanks for your comments. I would use the generator not just for charging the batteries, also for some 220V applications. It's decided! Love this forum.
What about the following idea for my extended cruising trip:
I buy a 2000W portable generator such as the Honda EU20i. Whenever I need 220V and/or want to charge the ship's batteries, I get the generator out while under sail, plug the generator's outlet into the shorepower inlet, and fire up...
