STUDLAND - How much do they want???

Bournemouth Bay? Bournemouth Bay - the sea area between Needles and Anvil Point encompassing Swanage, Studland, Poole, Christchurch Bays etc. I'm sorry, I didn't realise the nomenclature had been changed. I obviously need some new charts.

STUDLAND - How much do they want???

While applauding your campaigning for the continued use of Studland Bay as an anchorage, I feel your credibility, at least locally. is slightly undermined when you refer to Poole Bay as "Bournemouth Bay". Meanwhile, thank you for your perseverance for common sense in this controversy!

    Help save UK Wooden Boats????

Having just salvaged a wooden boat from Poole Harbour the word seems to have got around and I have been offered several other unfinished restoration projects in the area! There seem to be plenty of boats crying out for help but very few people prepared to take them on. Perhaps we need a rescue...

    Possible?

Yes, good luck, but enthusiasm and dreams for a beautiful old 38 footer could rapidly become a financial nightmare even if you don't actually do anything to her! Costs of storage and transport escalate rapidly with size, so something around 20ft which is possible to store and transport youself...

    Dropping a deck-stepped mast

I recently removed the 28ft ft keel-stepped wooden mast from my boat while it was on the mud ay low tide using an old 20ft spar I happened to have handy and a Mirror dinghy mainsheet. The spar was stuck in the mud resting against the side of the boat and supported by two lines to bow and stern...

    Isit or isn't it..a Classic?

Spooky Doug! I crossed the USA in my '66 Mini "woody" traveller via Route 66 on honeymoon! Then bought a Hillyard to cross the channel, but never quite made it! Oh Classic?! Definitely in the eye of the beholder (or owner!) and certainly not just an age thing.

    Raffles

Raffles' 3/4 ton cast-iron keel at last lifted from the mud of Poole Harbour and soon to be re-attached !! We hope to have her back in the water, albeit not in sailing mode, in time for the wonderful forthcoming summer !

    Whale Orca bilge pumps

These submersible bilge pumps have a three year warranty but their weakness is in the wiring as it leaves the plastic pump body. While using four such pumps in a recent salvage excersise two packed up for this reason and there is very little wire left to make a repair before it enters the sealed...

    Raffles

Removed the Yanmar 1GM10 engine today and despite all the prophets of doom who told me it would be scrap after 3+ months under water it is in amazing condition. The fuel lines still contained diesel, the bore is near perfect, valve gear perfect, and after a quick jet wash and blow dry engine and...

    Raffles

A visit to the Christchurch yard of Rossiters has confirmed that Raffles is indeed a Shelduck, probably built by them in the 1950s. They have a fine example afloat on one of their river moorings, and have agreed to search their records for original plans and specifications etc!! Why do wooden...

    Pole Lathe

My Dad was a glazier/leaded light maker and good amateur woodworker. He often used a piece of glass, of which he obviously had a plentiful supply, to finish off and clean up wood. It was used in the manner of a cabinet-maker's steel scraper by using two hands and drawing it towards you. The...

Allen Keys or is there something better?

If all else fails,( although I would favour a good quality torx socket as already suggested), place a 10mm or 12mm thread nut over the screw and carefully fill the centre with a MIG weld. Allow to cool and unscrew. I have used this method to extract broken studs and bolts on many occasions.

    Raffles

I am reliably informed that Raffles is a Shelduck, designed and built by Christchurch boatbuilders Rossiters who still exist, but I have yet to check any record they may have of this particular boat. The initial sinking was probably caused by rainwater as there is very little freeboard when she...
