Notices to Mariners - Week 03

A local Burnham one seems to have slipped through. The steel barge Beach Hut was swamped and sink in her mooring during the recent storm. Hopefully she will be well marked and salvaged soon.

    Annealing copper tube

Yes it would. Space is tight and I wanted to minimise the number of joints. A bulkhead bend would be ideal but I couldn't find one in stock and without a large delivery charge. I will order one to fit later, but right now I need a cup of tea!

Thanks guys. Let it cool naturally seems to be the way to go. "somewhere" I have a little bending machine, if I could only find it!

Suffolk Sailing - River Orwell - Deep Draft Keel vs Shoal Draft Keel

As a yoof I often crewed on a racing Stella at Burnham. Usually, the wifey stood in the hatchway calling out the depth from a Fairway Echo sounder [spinning neon]. One day I was assigned that duty and called out 6ft, 5ft, 4,ft, 3ft Gordon! Slither to a stop. "Why didn't you tack at 4ft?" " Oh...

    Toilet paper down the loo?

Had one problem in 50 years, attributed to 1st time sailing with 2 teenage girls. Quick bit of education sorted it. If I was to introduce a loo paper ban I think I'll be sailing on my own! Lavacs are go!

    Seago vs Ocean Safety Liferafts

Seago just quoted me £299 + £35 carriage for 1st service on a 4 man valise LR. They advised getting it booked in quickly as they are snowed under. I tried 2 other local service centres who seemed cheaper but it seems nobody else deals with Seago. So I'm locked in.

A little more of ol'will's adventures or that horrible bang from the rigging

A few years ago, on a visit to my son in Queensland, Australia were giving England a proper mauling at cricket. When they heard my pommie accent, everyone wanted to talk about cricket. On a later visit the tables were turned and it was impossible to start a conversation about the game..

    Courteous & considerate navigation

There have been occasions where I've come up against "predicted log" events with power boats, but not jet-ski races, yet. The manoeuvrability difference between an Optimist and a 31 ft cruiser was enough fun for me. I should have thought ahead more, and I shouldn't have been there anyway.

Change and decay in all around I see.

Dixon Kerly in Maldon was another one. Smelled of parafin and Stockholm tar, and hemp rope. I went to buy some asbestos string to wrap an exhaust pipe. " 30 feet of 1/4 inch asbestos string please" "Oh no, we've gone metric now" " OK, 10 metres of 6mm string then" He carefully measured it with a...

    Standing Mast Route

We are also 1.8m [a bit more in fresh water perhaps?] and have been as far as Leeuwarden without incident. Some places are too shallow but it's not really a problem, plenty of alternatives nearby. I would need to refresh my memory, but I think that the charts show winter levels, the summer...

    NASA log paddle wheel installation

My first one I fitted just using marine silicone, doing the nut hand tight. I knew better than the manufacturers so never bothered to follow the instructions. After about 2 years it snapped of in my hand while cleaning the impellor. Luckily I had a wooden plug nearby but it concentrates your...

    Tracker on your outboard ?

Ancient history now but my sailing club had an outboard stolen from a rescue boat. It was painted hi-vis orange with the club name on. A member who was a builder, saw it in the garden next door to where he was working and reported it to the police. When nothing was heard the club followed it up...
