Thanks for the link, all is now explained. The biggest gripe I have with Ipswich dock is the removal of the floating pontoon inside the lock out of season. Had an eventful ‘moment’ hanging from the chains last November. Will make sure the pontoon is in place before entering next time.
Came out an hour and a half after HW yesterday and saw a minimum depth of 3.3 metres. No problem, a bit bouncy due to the swell as we approached the Mid Knolls (green) but otherwise fine. Followed John White’s advice to stay close the Deben (green) and then move over to the West Knolls (red)...
Came into the Deben this morning at approx half tide and on the advice of John White passed the first red ‘West Knoll’ to starboard and the 3 other bouys correctly. Minimum depth observed was 1.9 m passing ’Knoll Spit’ and just upstream of ‘Mid Knoll’.
Thanks guys, plenty of good suggestions there, some I was aware of but others new to me. A useful resource. Horse Sand is very tempting, as is Wrabness or even in front of Shotley sailing club. Decision, decisions ……..
Yes, ‘Horse Sand’ is a possible option. Always looked hard and clear when I used to moor at FF. May have to give John White a call. I gather there are a few nice banks developing off the Deben entrance too!
Checked that area of the Orwell out at LW yesterday and there are a number of rocks strewn around. Had considered the grids at SYH which is my backup but they want £40 for non-bertholders!
Went into the Deben yesterday afternoon an hour before HW and saw a minimum depth of 4.1 metres with 3 metres of tide. On John White’s advice stuck close to the bouys which he says need tweaking slightly but otherwise the entrance seems, if anything, easier than in previous years. There are no...
As a matter of interest what was the minimum depth as you crossed the bar and what was the state of the tide? I ask as I have to move my boat from Levington to a mooring at Felixstowe Ferry in a couple of weeks.
