Opinions on boat types? Thinking of a motor sailer...

Yup, at 2800 rpm ford lehman 140hp in a flat sea with a clean bottom, Nauticat themselves give fuel consumption figs up to 13knots, never done that though. Optimum fuel v speed for Beleza seems to be 9.5 knots. When I brought her down to portugal non stop, liverpool to Lagos, she motorsailed...

Opinions on boat types? Thinking of a motor sailer...

I've spent my life sailing, starting of with a kayak on the canal as kid, through sailing dinghies, to a half tonner racing around the irish sea. I now have a Nauticat motorsailer, I've had her for ten years, the best decision I ever made, she's roomy, the size of a small house in fact, she...

Dinghies - PVC or Hypalon - soft or hard floor.

I'm with Graham on this, make covers, I have a 7 yr old suzamar from new,6 years in the algarve and is a sticky unpleasant mess. I wish I'd made covers for it when new, but I'm going to get a wavline like Grahams and then nick his covers, they real are superb:D:D:D:D

I need to know so much - Help!

another point in favour of a Mobo would be the fact that if you were buying in the uk and you travelled to he med via the canals, you would gain valuable experience in boat handling in a relatively safe environment and due to the low speeds on the canals your fuel bill is likely to be much...

I need to know so much - Help!

A semi planing Trader 50' mobo I helped deliver used a tenners worth of diesel every mile at 14 knots. Ouch! and that was five years ago. My Nauticat 44 motorsails at 10 knots and 4 litres an hour. I find her a good compromise between the sail/mobo conundrum. I sail when I can for nothing but a...

Greece: This might be good news?

Rather than assign 'unashamed' blame to Greece, first look at the moneylenders who were responsible (in the sense of cause and effect) for creating the debt, and who's only remedy is for Greece to take on even more debt. Classic loan-shark tactics. +1

What do you have aboard to amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

I could not agree more. It also teaches the kids the true relationship between burger on the bun and the cow in the field. Priceless in this supermarket age. I find the kids like to catch fish, but its me that despatches and cleans and cooks them. Other things to amuse myself on board...

    Superstitions where do you stand?

I wasn't superstitious till a mate rebuilt his Norton Comeandgo, changed the colour from blue to green, first time out he totalled it, rebuilt it again still green, we stood back admiring the newly rebuilt bike, and watched as it burst into flames. He rebuilt for a third time, this time blue.:D

    What's in a name?.....your boat.

My boats had a huge variety of names over her thirty two year life from Lady Babs, through Zygosis to finally the name she had when I bought her 'Beleza' Portugese for Beauty and she certainly is, aren't all our boats? So lazyness and superstition made me keep the name.:)
