Are you an 'anchor-plonker'?

Re: Are you an \'anchor-plonker\'? Buoys present a different set of problems- whose is it?.. is it sound?..is it a lobster pot?..etc. What I find intriguing about anchorage behaviour is the way some people take extreme care (as they should!) about where they lay their anchors in relation to...

    Are you an 'anchor-plonker'?

Are you an \'anchor-plonker\'? Dialogue, overheard in an Eastern-Med anchorage,recently.. ( blue boat arrives, just after a storm has abated, other boats lie,all on different headings!).. White Boat: 'Do you know where my anchor is?' Blue Boat: 'No. WB:'Neither do I, so clear off!' <hr...

How useful is navtex to cruisers

Shook my chain when someone mentioned the 'synopsis' at last! Forecasting weather will always be dodgy. all we can hope for is some warning of dire moves up there. Navtex does that as well as any, & is cheaper than most!

youngish persons plans in later life

What you should do, (& I speak as an 'oldish person',) is join a syndicate, - now! You will get all the experience you need for your eventual departure 'round the world', or whatever, & get your investment back at the end. Go for it !

    Sailing from Turkey to Greece

Can't let this one go by without comment! Don't know 'Kronos' agency, but I think you'll find that the 'illegal practice' starts further back than them. Try the Greek Authorities, who persist in applying this charge to other E.U. vessels!

    Greek/Turkish Camping Gas

'Blue' gas is available in Turkey, but only in the Med. coast stretch. As you go into the Agean parts, 'silver' gas becomes the norm. However, a conversion kit is available', & not expensive.

Holding tanks - a matter of responsibility?

Re: Beware confusing self Such a learned discussion on such a mundane subject! I can only add one bit of useful advice......we always put up a notice in the heads when visitors are expected, which reads, 'Don't put anything through this that hasn't been through you!.....-which seems to keep...

    Wintering in the Eastern Med.

Hi! Have stayed in Setur's marinas at both Cesme & Kusadasi, with no complaints. Haven't been east of the bay of Fethiye before- what's the winter weather like?

    Wintering in the Eastern Med.

Anyone recommend a good spot to overwinter, e.g. Kemer, Antalya etc.? Requirements include: sheltered berth, reasonable on-shore facilities, & not too many days of rain!

    Living aboard

Re: Curious ... Yes- and back again! At present I own sufficient shares to allow me to enjoy 10 weeks in the eastern Med. every year, which I find about enough for an ancient mariner! If you're really interested in finding out how it works,(it's vastly cheaper than charter) send me a p.m. <hr...

    Living aboard

Re: Curious ... 'Sell up and sail', -great idea, but raises many questions, e.g., which boat, which area, what if I don't take to the life,or (worse!), what if SWAMBO doesn't!- meanwhile, the house, and most of the money ,have gone.... Alternative- look at share-boat syndicates. Choose a boat...

    Dodecanese

Don't miss Panormittis Bay on Simi. One of the safest spots in the Rhodes Sea area, a useful hideaway in a blow, and nice bread available at the monastery!

See many of our subscribers struggling with such questions as 'where to start?', 'what sort of boat?', etc. We started ten years ago by joining a 'shareboat' syndicate in the Med.,& thus got the experience without risking everything! Or is this just the cowards way out?
