Could someone enlighten me what they think this boat is?
Orion kind of gives it away but what model etc, in need of a sail etc but hard to restore when I'm unsure what kind it is.

I don't know what it is, though someone here will probably recognise it, but you don't really need to know what it is in order to refit it. Boats aren't cars, you won't be looking for specific parts like you would for an '87 Escort or whatever.

So why did you respond so oddly when Old Harry told you?

Pete
Because I'm new to all this and asked what it is? A simple explanation, "you can find out here" would have sufficed,
If you cant help me then that's fine, appreciate it.

Old Harry's post is a clickable link to the Seawych web site. The boat that you are asking about is a Seawych...
Is it? Ok awesome thank you I will go an have a look shortly, thank you,
Do you know what they are like? Any good? Or just good in their prime? Just curious like I said to someone else I'm new to all this, never owned a boat let alone restore one. So many more stupid questions will follow

I have no idea but there is some useful information in this thread from a couple of years ago, as well as on the owners web site......

I've not had a Seawych but knew a couple of owners. They loved them. However there are a couple of drawbacks. One you can't do much about is that they are a quite stodgy bilge keel design with those vertical foils. It doesn't help them perform as well as the more usual bilge keel design in which they are splayed.

That means when you heel the leeward keel digs deep in and becomes about vertical.

The other thing is that many Seawyches are very smart boats indeed. That one looks like it could be pretty tired. Old small boats never repay the time and money spent to bring them up to snuff.
Been there, done that, etc.
There are loads of small 18 ft boats around and probably some smart ones for not much money. Not many adverts at the moment, but asking in marinas, clubs and yards may uncover some.
If you can find one with a trailer, that's a bonus.
Don't get one with baggy sails. New sails will double your investment.
They are only small boats and will never achieve a high selling price, however much love you put into them.

Ah! Ok that kind of sums up the boat I have ? my intention is not to restore to sell, my intention is to restore and enjoy fun times, I'm not interested in getting my money back on it! But that comment has completely helped me miles!
Thank you

I thought you were considering buying it. If you already own it then take my thoughts a stage further and look for economy fixes. Do not overspend. Don't forget that newer sails may be available from another ytpe of boat. I matched up some sails from an Osprey dinghy for a small yacht once and they were cheap and a good fit. Many racers sell old sails pretty cheap and in pretty good condition.

Some of us get get lots of satisfaction and fun out of restoring ,improving and maintaining our boats , just like people do with classic cars.
If it were not for some of these people many boats would have vanished years ago.
