My god what a bunch of miseries....

Seems most members of the Parish have seen this.. yet no one is responding.. Are you all so convinced you are going to peg it that you can't look forward ?

We're hoping that Pirates Day will still go ahead in early August at the usual place

Indeed.

Ipswich Maritime Festival has been postponed, date TBA.

ECC have a trip to Chatham late July, bit dubious about that, as it also involves a visit to the Historic Navy Yard, maybe too croweded for that in July ?

The pirate weekend might be just the thing, far enough away and not in a crowded location. pirates at 2 metres :)

It's now extremely unlikely that Pagan will go back in the water this year so i / we (? depending on dates) will either be missing or hitching!

If we are back, we will be at the Pirates Meet but suspect we will still be in Portugal.

We had planned to arrive back in Walton this weekend but a big stroke of luck for us being locked down in The Algarve.

If things continue as they are, in The Algarve, with only 134 cases reported and 4 elderly deaths in a population of 1/2 a million and the rate only increasing by a very few daily, I suspect that by early summer, the terms of lock-down may be slightly relaxed to permit some limited local day sailing. Especially, as Portugal hopes to vaccinate all 9 million residents as soon as possible.

To date, here, way out west in Lagos, there have been no reported cases of the virus - the whole region is in total lock-down, with no access to would be visitors. This is being enforced by the para-military GNR and the Maritime Police and if necessary, supported by the armed forces.

In Portugal, the authorities do not mess around with softly softly or take prisoners. Memories of their time as a police state under Salazar‼️

Probably long before any similar relaxation in Essex, in which case (being Portuguese residents, with no Schengen time limits on our length of stay), we may remain out here for the rest of this year, until Spring 2021.

As an aside, which could effect you folks in the UK, who want to cruise continuously in The EU longer than 90 days, in response to a direct written question from a friend in Portugal to the EU in Brussels, Schengen will not apply in the Schengen Zone (which is pretty much all of the EU), to Brits holding residency in an EU country. Of course, yet to be tested, but if true, we will continue to enjoy complete freedom of movement through out the EU ie UK to France, Holland and The Baltic during the summer months.

In recent times, getting residency in Portugal was probably one of the best the best moves we made. ✔️

As I write, post Brexit but during the Transition Period it is still possible for Brits to get residency in Portugal.

Unlike in many other EU states, in Portugal, because of grandfather treaty rights, it is possible to hold both British citizenship and Portuguese residencia at the same time but to be only taxed in only one or other of the countries. Largely, your decision which.

Finally, the Portuguese actually like the English - bit of a one of.

Sorry, you guys on the fringes of the UK, as the treaties pre-date The Union (by some 300 years), the Portuguese are not too sure who the Celts are so lump us all together - as English. ?

With the weather, apart from no live rugby (Portugal are currently 21 in the world rankings), it couldn’t be much better?

Sorry if I appear to gloat but, after Covid19, you could always come and join us in our adopted country.?

It's when it's over is the problem. They have finally come to terms with the fact that we will not be free of this and back to normal until their is a vaccine because it's always going to be their somewhere lurking ready to get spread around again. They also now believe that once you've had it you are not immune to it so herd immunity doesn't work. Bit like the common flu only more dangerous. How long can the government pay for people to stay at home though? It's a royal pain in the arse, especially for those that are still working and having to carry on as normal except with a much higher workload than before! Nurses, doctors, shopworkers, postmen, dustmen etc all having to do extra at the moment.

Actually not too sure it is any worse than winter flu in a bad year.

The big problem is that there is no herd a immunity so it is hitting many more people. The old regularly die of flu but unfortunately because there is so much much of it, it is overwhelming immune systems that would usually cope.

The other problem as there is no vaccine, there is no protection.

This all adds up to the pandemic we are experiencing.

Little doubt, as before, nature will right itself and the world will gradually return to where it was before.

I only know a little of what a couple of nurses in the NHS have been dealing with and I can confidently say it is already far worse than anything that has been experienced previously , in living memory.

50% more deaths than usual at this time of year... Not sure if this counts as "not much worse" or "worse than anything previous" but there is no doubt that in my view the economic results of not overwhelming the NHS (but not necessarily saving many lives as 55% on ventilators are dying) is worse than anything I have previously experienced.
