Ushant tidal stream vs Ultim maxi trimarans: 1 - 0 :giggle:
Very little wind and spring tides, the giants obliged to retrace.

I watched the start live on YouTube. There’s a 2 hour clip of it you can watch, in the meantime, here’s a short taster.

Not sure why Bureau Vallée has retired.

Watching the progress of the respective classes in this race is fascinating.
The lack of comment on the forum perhaps demonstrates a serious decline in participants. For the Vendée there were almost hourly posts!

We have some friends who just crossed from Portugal to Porto Santo. They had a close encounter with two of the racing yachts doing 20kts at night with nobody on watch. They couldn't raise anybody on the radio. Had to take last minute evasive action. They weren't impressed.

I wonder if the fact that there are hardly any Brits affects this? Very little (no?) coverage on the BBC, for example.

Don’t think British participants make much difference to UK media coverage - long days of extremely boring cricket get massive coverage, physical violence (boxing etc) gets lots of coverage, but not sailing

Putting others lives at risk is naughty

That’s a little strange. These are not solo sailors - they have two crew and one is up driving while the other sleeps.

Our friends say that one of the boats they had to alter course for had the words ' solo sailor"' in the AIS identification so not all two up.

They are all 2 up, the TJV is a doublehanded race.

The boats are often (normally) sailed solo, so have that descriptor on the AIS normally, mostly to correct the assumption amongst some big ship crews that something doing over 20kts can't possibly be a sailboat with the only person on board asleep...

They probably just didn't bother/remember to change the AIS descriptor for this race...

Then to be honest, in these days the autopilot is normally faster than the human driver, so the "on watch" person is not driving, but either trimming or looking at the weather and nav, or doing any of the hundred jobs that might need to get done.
That's not to excuse a poor lookout btw, just by way of an explanation as to how it might happen.

AIS may be just a leftover from previous setup but the TJV is all boats 2 up.

the idea is to have one crew driving the boat fast during their watch and then rotate out at end of shift.
