Was that in the last (boring :)) episode? I don't remember seeing it or falling asleep.

You didn't - it's going on on the associated Facebook page, adduced by Burgundyben in Post 37, above. I think we are perhaps three episodes or six weeks away from decision time on this one, as Leo has to frame out the stern with twelve more live oak double frames, and then rebuild the stem and the apron (more fag paper fits with huge baulks of timber!) and then frame out the bow - another dozen double live oak frames.

Someone on the facebook discussion mentioned making the patterns for casting by using some plastic material and a hot air gun, to warm the plastic to maker it conform to the shape needed, then let it cool, I thought this was a fab idea, you could add a little shim to allow for shrinkage.

Remininded me there is such a thing as Foundryman's ruler - its made to a scale larger than true to allow for shrinkage.

Does anyone know what Leo's long term plan is once the boat is done? E.g. sale? (Presumably not.) Charters? Personal use?

And whether it is financially viable? Presumably fitting out the hull, decking it, spars, sails, electrics, machinery etc will cost another medium-sized fortune?

I wish him well and hope that he doesn't run out of steam..

I predict sailing home via North Passage.

Doesn't seem to be that easy to guarantee a place:

but this should help him ... sold out ... it's often "who you know" :)

From time to time, there is an Old Gaffers’ Class. I seem to recall that “Jolie Brise” and “Duet” have taken part, and no doubt others have. I suspect that “Tally Ho!” vs “Jolie Brise” would commend itself to the Powers that Be,

Patrons will have had an email update that the frame raising party has made excellent progress.

Anyone here going to the talk in London later this month?

Yes. Looking forward to it.

Interesting talk. 1/3 the history of the boat, 1/3 Leo, 1/3 the restoration.

2025 (centenary of first) Fastnet or 2027 (centenary of Tally Ho's win) is on the cards.
Use after restoration finished something community based. Sailing.
There was a camera at the back recording everything, so I would think that the whole thing (2 hours or so) will get uploaded at some point.

Being a Patron doesn’t really entitle me to anything except:

My boat’s name in a book he’s going to carry onboard

Emails with content I think I see on FaceBook anyway.

A great deal of satisfaction derived from knowing I’m helping a worthwhile guy with a worthwhile project.

The inalienable right to know if Cecca is rejoining him :encouragement::encouragement:

Oh, and you can spill the beans on what happened to his finger if you want to.

But, Cecca

I'd expect "Duet" (aka "the Trust Fund Babe" - she has her very own Trust Fund to take care of her) to be along, too - she has done Old Gaffers' Fastnets in the past, as hase Jolie Brise iirc)

Jolie Brise -
https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:183542/vessel:JOLIE BRISE
was in the 1993 Fastnet - we were sailing against her on Stormy Weather.
https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:194457/vessel:STORMY WEATHER

Jolie retired at some stage - I think probably because it was a beat the whole way down channel (I remember seeing her stomping along with the main well reefed, but not very close winded), and then we had a Force 7 on the nose all the way to the Fastnet. A bit too boisterous for my liking really.

That would be brilliant if Dorade (and perhaps even Stormy) could take part in this special Fastnet as well.
Although Stormy now lives in the lap of luxury in the South of France. She won the Fastnet in the early 30's, soon after she was built, and she has been in various others since. Paul owned her for more than 20 years, and during that time he made almost 40 transatlantic passages with her. He still keeps his original website for her going.

With a detailed account of her history and re-build here (not quite as much work required as Tally Ho, but still substantial)

Marinetraffic hasn't 'seen' Dorade since September last year, when she was in Newport - I wonder where she is now?
