At West Highland Week many years ago the race committee used a southerly cardinal mark south of Kerrera as a mark of the course. It was off station, having dragged north, and virtually the entire fleet sailed over or close to the rock it wasn't marking! One boat hit the rock and sank...

First Mate and I try to be considerate to racing yachts but, especially in the Solent, some racers appear to have a sense of misplaced entitlement.

Approaching the Inner Swatchway to enter Portsmouth Harbour we had a spinnaker pole almost brain First mate from a large racing boat with the crew -and Spinnaker-in matching purple. She had to duck and it only just cleared our shrouds.

They were almost, but not quite, out of control. The shout of "Get clear - we are racing" did not endear them to us.....................................:(

Many moons ago in Sydney Harbour a group of fishermen were tied to a rounding marker. On the first lap we suggested they move, the second lap we flew a hull over them, they weren’t there on the third lap! Fun days racing cats in a crowded harbour. Cheers

He’s just an obstruction, it’s true. The problem is probably for the mobo. When he sees the Yarmouth XOD fleet bearing down on him 6 abreast, kites up, he may be tempted to revise his mooring options.
Dont see why. The ColRegs are clear - its their job to avoid him whether he should be tied to the mark or not.

Is a Dragonfly similar to an Anderson 21 ?

There no way anyone on a 20 grand antique race boat is going to hit him. But they will be within less than a foot, in all probability. He may find that a bit unnerving.
