Friday visited The Crown And Anchor, Dell Quay, 2 large glasses of Shiraz and a lovely view, £16.50. The wine was OK. Only got the view because it was well past lunch time, all tables reserved for diners
Saturday went for lunch at The Gate House, Chichester. Two Chicken, Avocado and Maple smoked Bacon Salads with 2 large glasses of equally drinkable Shiraz , £15.90 TOTAL. The view wasn't so spectacular, admittedly, but the salad included Cos lettuce, Rocket, Cucumber, Red Onion,& Cherry Tomatoes, and a Balsamic Vinegar dressing, and the glasses were sparkling clean. Fellow diners are huge 90th birthday party, same table often occupied by wheelchairs because it is so accessible, and regular ' quality time ' lunches for dads and grand parents with broken families. And cash strapped yachties, it seems.
And now we are losing it. Why, it always seems full to me, and the staff are young and friendly. Is it BUSINESS RATES, or a side effect of BREKSHIT - Tim, I think we should know.

Sad person, the Dog and Duck is no substitute. too full, for a start.

Perhaps they've gone bust because they sold you "Two Chicken, Avocado and Maple smoked Bacon Salads with 2 large glasses of equally drinkable Shiraz for £15.90 TOTAL."

Clearly their costs were higher than their income at those sorts of prices.

Having said that, the Crown and Anchor's pricing policy is not governed by costs. That pub is the only one in the owner's 'chain' that is outside London, and for simplicity, they've decided to keep the prices in line with their other establishments. They reckon that most of their clientele are down from London anyway and think the prices are normal. You can't fault their logic as the parked cars often stretch for a mile down the access road at a weekend.
