First training ride this morning, a cold and windy 12 miles. Didn't want to push too hard today as I only had the ablation last Wednesday, so still early doors. Took the mountain bike rather than the roady one, going for comfort not speed. No ill effects, so looking forward to the next one.

Excellent Paul, always a good feeling to get the training underway and great to hear it went well considering the treatment you've just gone through. Spookily, did 12 miles myself today too, was a bitch going up hill against the wind so also kept it to 12 miles. May have to get used to that with the direction we'll be riding in on the day i.e. towards the south west!

Thanks Gary. Yes we will be cycling into the prevailing wind. Any raggies doing the ride? They might have to tack :D

Yep I'm a raggie and it's not unusual to have quite a bit of east or north wind that early in the season. We can always hope!

Christmas training so far is 8 miles to and from a party on Saturday night and 12 miles delivering cards yesterday. SWMBO has another card delivery for me today on the far side of Portsdown Hill!

East or North Easterly would be fantastic, but best we can really hope for is a dry day. Wet and windy is not nice! So you are fairly local of the final run in. Any local knowledge we can learn from?

I put a few comments on the route thread about the approach to Southampton. I hope to do a few training rides in that area in the spring.

Another Straining ride this morning. Similar length and route, and it felt a bit easier than Sunday. Could be that the wind has dropped. I will up the distance next ride at the weekend. A bit of saddle soreness following Sunday's ride, so will have to invest in some padded shorts

found an excuse to do another 12 miler today.. bought a pair of these http://www.exustar.co.uk/exustar-e-sr931k-road-cycling-shoes-315-p.asp and a set of these http://www.exustar.co.uk/exustar-e-pr200wh-white-pedals--keo-compatible--208-p.asp

Got rid of the existing pedals with toe clips and found the clipless setup very enjoyable to use.. didn't fall off the bike whilst clipped in..... yet :)
Crikey Gary, they are some Gucci shoes!! Do you have the inappropriate Lycra to go with them?
I use good old fashioned toe clips on the mountain bike, and Look cleated pedals on my roady bike. Going to need some good padded shorts before I venture out on the road bike though :)
Good job on the straining ride, will need 2 helpings of Christmas pud to aid recovery :D

I've been averaging 13mph Howard but am unfit and I think it fair to say a tad older than your good self :) I intend to improve on that time as training progresses.

Remember guys, this isn't 68 miles straight, you get to rest and recharge every 20 miles or so. As said already, if you can do 35 to 40 miles in training, you'll not have a problem with a staged 68 miler on the day

I am starting from a pretty poor base, and probably averaging 13 or so mph. I will be aiming to ave 15 mph on the ride in June. Probably 2 stops will work for me, at 25 and 50 miles. I rode for 90 mins today, and needed a couple of short stops as my back was aching. This is a matter of getting miles on the bike, getting some muscles back in the right places. I'm also on warfarin for the next 3 months, till I see the specialist again. Thinner blood does not help my back as it gives less support to the core muscles at the base of my spine. Will talk to a physio to get some excercises for this.

As I say, training starts on Friday, new year and all that, looking to do around 30 miles a week to start until the light improves and I can get out in the he evening. I'm thinking that as long as I get some time in the he saddle I should be able to manage it but I have to say, after yesterday's very short ride, I have some work to do!!

Fund raising starts in earnest in January!

.... Just gonna put it out there... I am dry in January... No booze for me in all of January.... (February on the other hand as I am on holiday for 2 weeks!)

Not sure going dry is good for you :)
