My brother has a SPOT Satellite Messenger, however I was under the illusion that the text messaging would send a message that could be input while at sea, this does not seem to be possible, unless you have Internet connection, in which case you don’t really need SPOT.

It appears to me that when the text messaging works, apparently available in UK from sometime in May, it only sends a predefined message to the recipients. If I am wrong please someone tell me, and also explain how one enters the text message while at sea.

Apart from the above the unit does work well and the Google Earth connection is also useful. SPOT is available from a number of UK suppliers, just Google “SPOT Satellite Messenger”, however there are some grey imports which may not have the same support.

Good luck to you all and I hope none of you need to send any message other than “I am OK”.

As this is my line of interest, may I suggest you peep at the following three links below.

Obviously, they are aiming the equipment at the commercial market to start with as this will generate the greatest financial gain initially so North America, Europe, Australia with its outback and China are the main target areas.

In time, other places will be covered but at least the equipment is relatively cheap.

The second article is dated September 2007 so things have moved on in the intervening time:
