Does anyone have any first-hand experience of servicing Tufnol winches, please?

Is it easier to remove the whole winch assembly from its position, or to remove just the winch, leaving the base in place? I understand there can be a problem with the springs when removing and re-assembling.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

You are possibly in the wrong forum!!!!! Go to PBO unless of course it is a 100HP ships winch :)

If a yacht winch then remove the drum and service the revealed pawls and springs and re assemble. Tufnol only requires water as a lubricant but pawls like grease.

As Bilgediver advises you'll have more luck in 'Reader to reader' in PBO, but for what it's worth. When you undo the central bolt in the winch barrel and lift the barrel off, the pawls are spring tensioned and may fly out of the little notches that they rest in. First you'll know is a slight splash as they go over the side...if the winches are on the cockpit coaming and you haven't draped a cloth or something over the barrel as you carefully lift it off. Apart from that they're dead easy to service..:)
